Abstract This qualitative study documents the experiences of 38 Grade 5 students and their six female teachers from four state‐maintained schools in Kazakhstan teaching/learning English during emergency remote teaching learning (ERT&L). It was guided by Kearney et al .’s (2012) framework that provides three dimensions influence individuals’ experience when using technological devices: personalisation , collaboration authenticity . The data collected through online individual interviews students’ drawings suggest participants asserted agentive reflexivity critical awareness advantages drawbacks ERT&L experiences. Background: As a result of the global school closures in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, distance learning, educational technology and learning by oneself has gained attention both teachers parents, as well schools worldwide. So far, knowledge regarding been contradictory gathered mostly quantitative manner. Aim: The aim following article is examine distance-learning experiences four youngsters aged 16 from DigiGen project exploratory pilot study Estonia—a country known for its digital development. focuses on how was construed during young people. Method: These experiences, semi-structured in-depth interviews, are placed framework theory transactional critical discourse analysis. Results: results indicate, derived structure organisation learning—the more rigid structure, difficult it students. Five main discourses emerged learning: (1) building learning; (2) teach instead self-learning; (3) forced activity; (4) avoiding asking help; dominant all (5) responsibility.
