Energy efficiency plays a vital role in the transition towards carbon neutrality. The rapid rise of digital economy as an emerging growth engine raises important questions about its capacity to enhance energy efficiency. Understanding this relationship is essential for advancing sustainable development and minimizing emissions. Using spatial Durbin models, mediation panel threshold paper empirically examines nonlinear impact on utilization efficiency, taking Chinese cities case study areas. This research shows that there U-shaped between characterized by initial suppression followed promotion, while economy’s improvement surrounding inverted relationship, demonstrating promotion suppression. Heterogeneity studies found eastern has significant positive promotional effect central western regions show suppressive effect. Mechanism tests indicated enhances promoting industrial structure upgrading improving green technological progress. However, significantly affected external factors exhibits effects—only when urban levels cross specific values can generate

Abstract Amidst the escalating challenge of global climate change, it is imperative to further explore whether digital trade, as an emerging element in development landscape, can reduce carbon emissions and achieve sustainable development. This study draws upon panel data encompassing 30 provinces municipalities China spanning years 2013 2021. By establishing index system gauge regional trade levels, article examines impact mechanism spillover effects on reduction from both supply (enterprises) demand (residents) perspectives. The research results show that: (1) Digital effectively promote reduction, with a more pronounced effect China's central western regions lower regions. (2) incentivize green innovation by enterprises improve residents' consumption behavior, thereby reducing emissions. (3) has emissions, this “neighborhood effect” greater than “local effect”. provides strong support for also strategic direction government policy formulation.
