Published: May 9, 2024

Although the effect of campus landscape space on stress relief among college students has been confirmed, few existing studies have considered impact recovery from perspective factor combination, and key visual elements most effective combination to relieve are still unclear. This study attempts conduct a natural experiment within Chinese campuses, measuring physiological indicators such as heart rate (HR), frequency domain index variability (LF/HF), skin conductance level (SCL), temperature (SKT), respiratory (RESP) using instruments. It explored effects their combinations in spaces short-term through semantic segmentation, multifactorial analysis variance, post hoc multiple comparison methods. Research results demonstrate that presence water field vision can effectively improve spaces. Reasonable artificial design also promote students. Building facade area sky area, plant species pavement three factors with strongest interactive effects. “Natural scenery” “exquisite artificial” two patterns conducive relief.

Purpose College student’s mental health issues have emerged as a significant public concern. The urban campus environment, being the primary habitat for college students, plays crucial role in influencing their health. Design/methodology/approach Based on survey data from 34 Chinese universities and 1173 students 2021, this study utilized deep learning street view images to explore relationship between various landscapes, students' exercise participation, Findings revealed substantial variations landscape features, particularly terms of spatial openness. While green landscapes (measured by Green View Index Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) showed no impact participation or health, Sky Factor did. Higher levels openness frequency were associated with better also underscored that influence was mediated participation. Notably, most prominent differentiating factor among attributes, significantly affecting Originality/value Thus, fostering open environments reducing constraints are vital steps creating sustainable can help alleviate potential negative effects issues.
