Plastics have become ubiquitous in our lives. Due to the ever-increasing population, rapid urbanization, and industrial advancement, use of plastics has increased manifold. These plastic materials often disintegrate into microplastics (MPs) which are less than 5mm size. MPs mostly enter aquatic habitats through improper waste management, illegal dumping, unavoidable unintentional discharges that take place during construction, manufacturing, farming, domestic consumption, recreational activities. This review centers on exploring origin, occurrence, possible adverse effects human well-being. Of 485 literature reviewed for study between 2014- 2023, 105 were found be related spread over 10 themes. The contamination of freshwater with microplastics (MPs) has been established globally. While the analysis MPs predominantly involved spectroscopic methods for revealing particle numbers, potential employing spectroscopy mass estimation underutilized. Consequently, there is a need to enhance our understanding loads and ensure complementarity comparability various techniques accurate quantification. This study presents first comparative results on urban water samples using micro Fourier-transform infrared (μ-FTIR) imaging pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) identify quantify in both numbers concentration. Two sampling campaigns summer winter were conducted at 11 locations within Amsterdam canal network. An advanced in-situ volume-reducing pump was employed collect from surface size fraction 10-300 μm. revealed MP concentrations range 16 -107 MP/m3, estimated be 2.0-789 μg/m3 by μ-FTIR 8.5-754 Py-GC-MS. two showed good terms general trends abundances, variations polymer compositions due inherent inter-methodological differences. Elevated observed city center compared suburban areas. In addition, seasonal differences abundances noted high human activity.

Microplastics are distributed in the environment and considered emerging pollutants because they not regulated by legislation. This article aims to know current state of knowledge regarding microplastic pollution coastal areas Colombia. Therefore, a detailed search was carried out databases such as Scopus, Google Scholar, university repositories collecting scientific academic information published between 2000 March 2022. As result review, presence microplastics Colombia identified, particularly water, sediments, fish, thus evidencing contamination ecosystems, where Caribbean coast is area with highest amount especially Cartagena (249-1387 particles/m2) Santa Marta (144-791 particles/m2). It also found that 302 species 7% contained Ciénaga Grande Marta. In studies, on other hand, it observed there no standardized methodology; each researcher chooses different approach according literature. The studies showed most abundant were secondary microplastics, which polypropylene polyethylene predominant due their applications society. review will serve baseline for future research identify challenges realities country face these pollutants.

ABSTRACT One area of growing concern was the presence microplastics (MPs) in agricultural irrigation systems, where they entered and affected soil quality plant health. This study evaluated impact MPs on growth through a comprehensive analysis existing literature, focusing studies that examined water, including their identification, occurrence, environmental impacts systems. systems are transported by deposited soil, trapped sediments, or infiltrated deeper layers, interacting with chemicals increasing toxicity risks. Additionally, water disrupted physical properties reducing porosity aggregate stability, while altering nutrient cycling processes, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus dynamics. Moreover, negatively microbial communities fauna, further compromising fertility. These disturbances significantly hinder productivity health, suggesting urgent need for mitigation strategies. The uptake translocation crops impaired growth, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, induced oxidative stress. highlights potential long‐term risks contamination, emphasizing threat to sustainability. Consequently, posed significant health productivity, underscoring importance addressing this emerging issue ensure sustainable practices.

Following global trends, research to determine the presence and abundance of microplastics (MPs) in environmental matrices Colombia has focused on coastal marine environments. However, little scientific information is available impact this pollutant wetlands fish. In study, we provided data occurrence MPs water fish from Tocagua Lake, an important wetland Colombian Caribbean, unique habitat wild cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus). Water (72) (228 individuals six species) samples were collected during four sampling events two climatic seasons (wet dry). A total 1174 microplastic particles with average at stations sampled 0.96 ± 0.40 MPs/L, 648 identified gastrointestinal tract 191 individuals, corresponding a frequency 83.7%. Black- blue-colored fiber that predominated both (water fish), seven types polymers through attenuated reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The abundance, type, color not significantly different between seasons.
