Biska, a traditional Istrian herbal spirit, is produced by macerating mistletoe leaves and twigs in water–ethanol base, usually grape marc spirit. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal maceration parameters (ethanol content, concentration plant material, duration) for production biska, which have not yet been subject scientific research. prepared macerates collected biska samples were subjected phenolic compound characterization, including total content (TPC), flavonoid (TFC), polyphenolic profile, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS2). In addition, analyzed their biological properties: antioxidant antiproliferative activity. results showed that both contain compounds such as acids, flavonoids, coumarins, contribute observed activities—significant activity effect. By applying parameters, yielded highest well volatile aromatic (40–80 g/L mistletoe, 40–55% v/v ethanol, 21 days’ time), process can be improved produce better properties.

From an economic and ecological standpoint, it is crucial to investigate the biologically active compounds of mistletoe plants, which are currently discarded by pruning urban mistletoe-infested trees. In present study, content phenolic compounds, triterpenic organic acids, as well antioxidant activity extracts various organs (leaves, stems, fruits) collected from most infested tree species were investigated. The samples Betula pendula, Acer platanoides, Crataegus monogyna, Sorbus aucuparia showed highest acids flavonoids activity, measured 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. leaves stems Tilia cordata characterized a high (oleanolic, ursolic, betulinic). fruits plants Populus nigra Salix alba contained concentration particularly succinic citric acids. Compared stem leaf extracts, fruit was 1.5-3 times higher. obtained results indicate that valuable raw material can be used source for producing with properties.

Viscum is one of the most famous and appreciated medicinal plants in Europe beyond. The symbiotic relationship with host tree various endogenous ecological aspects are main factors on which viscum metabolites' profiles depend. However, Romanian relatively few refer mainly to antioxidant antiproliferative activity mistletoe Acer campestre, Fraxinus excelsior, Populus nigra, Malus domestica, or Robinia pseudoacacia. This study reports first complete low-molecular-weight metabolite profile wild-grown viscum.
