Professional accountability is considered important to the legitimacy and survival of a profession. Prior research has examined role top-down scrutiny by audiences, such as supervisors, regulators, certification agencies, in improving professional accountability. But advent social media platforms increasingly enabled bottom-up professionals—especially professionals on front line—by audiences customers public. In this research, I examine how when through (hereafter, scrutiny) impacts frontline professionals. Conducting an ethnography 911 emergency management organizations, find that call-takers—the setting—can obscure rather than improve elaborate how, why, under what conditions pushes deviate from their mandate, which, turn, obscures sense These processes also generate spillover effects everyday work mandate downstream (e.g., dispatchers, police officers), producing cascading set unintended consequences further for multiple actors across ecosystem.

Special emphasis is placed identifying personal contextual factors shape promise-compliance perceptions actions likely follow. Findings This conceptual presents contracting. limitations/implications Detailed analyses needed proposed granularity contract (PC) using stronger qualitative designs (e.g. event sampling, ethnographies). Other priorities include determining (1) how extracted cues meaning affected by culture, (2) technology (i.e. algorithmic management) impacts tendencies, (3) whether union engagement repair creates separate PCs rank-and-file members stemming from perceived or actual representational promises. Abstract Platform companies use techniques of algorithmic management to control their users. Though digital marketplaces vary in these techniques, few studies have asked why. This question is theoretically consequential. Economic sociology has traditionally focused on the embedded activities market actors explain competitive and valuation dynamics markets. But restrictive platforms can leave little autonomy actors. Whether or not analytical focus interactions makes sense thus depends how platform is, turning into a first order concern. The paper argues that we why adopt more less architectures by focusing design logic informs construction. Platforms treat markets as search algorithms blend software computation with human interactions. If algorithm requires follow narrow scripts behavior, should become restrictive. need for centralized computation, degree which required inputs be standardized, misalignment interests between discusses criteria mobilized four illustrative cases.

Purpose Over the past decade, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have rapidly advanced organizational management, with many organizations adopting AI-based algorithms to enhance employee management efficiency. However, there remains a lack of sufficient empirical research on specific impacts these algorithmic practices behavior, particularly potential negative effects. To address this gap, study constructs model based psychological ownership theory, aiming investigate how affects employees’ knowledge hiding. Design/methodology/approach This validates through situational experiment and multi-wave field involving full-time employees in implementing management. Various analytical methods, including analysis variance, regression path analysis, were used systematically test hypotheses. Findings The reveals that exerts positive indirect influence hiding personal knowledge. effect is pronounced when lower identification, highlighting critical role culture effectiveness technological applications. Originality/value among first investigations explore relationship between from an individual perception perspective.
