The objective of this study was to evaluate the cross-sectional relationship between sleep duration and hypertension in a large, nationally-representative dataset that spans 10 years. This analysis may provide detailed information with high resolution about how is related differs by demographic group.Data were aggregated from 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n = 433,386) combined 2007-2016 National Health Interview Surveys 295,331). These data collected Centers for Disease Control Prevention samples. combined, survey-specific weights used all analyses. Sleep assessed item, "On average, many hours do you get 24-hour period?" both surveys. Hypertension as self-reported history. Covariates identically datasets included, age (in 5-year groupings), sex, race/ethnicity, employment status. In adjusted analyses, compared 7 hours, increased risk seen among those sleeping ≤ 4 (odds ratio [OR] 1.86, P < .0005), 5 (OR 1.56, 6 1.27, 9 1.19, ≥ 1.41, .0005). When stratified age, race/ethnicity groups, short associated groups 70 years, long (≥ only) except 24 years > 74 Findings relatively consistent across race/ethnicities, although findings less pronounced Black/African-American Other/Multiracial groups. A significant 3-way × sex interaction (P .0005) suggests depends on sex. For men women, OR having decreases increasing but there higher association throughout adult lifespan. Both are most influence covariates stronger upon relationships. Relationships younger adults women.

Consumer sleep tracking devices such as fitness trackers and smartphone apps have become increasingly popular. These claim to measure the duration of their users in some cases purport quality awaken from light sleep, potentially improving overall sleep. Most these appear utilize data generated in-built accelerometers determine parameters but exact mechanisms algorithms are proprietary. The growing literature comparing against polysomnography/actigraphy shows that they tend underestimate disruptions overestimate total times efficiency normal subjects. In this review, we evaluate current accuracy consumer more conventional methods used quality. We discuss technology well summarize value clinical evaluations potential limitations.
