The Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) conducts global and regional oceanographic research in support of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) three mission areas: (1) understanding predicting changes climate, weather, oceans, coasts; (2) sharing that knowledge with others; (3) conserving managing coastal marine ecosystems resources. Since its establishment 1973, PMEL’s work has ranged from pole to across ocean. lab’s examined ocean structure function physical, chemical, biological realms, informed supported development US policy these areas.

The NOAA Vents program was established in 1983 at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL; Hammond et al., 2015), just six years after discovery of hydrothermal vents and their unique chemosynthetic ecosystems (Corliss 1979). Because seafloor venting contributes significantly to transfer heat mass from solid Earth ocean, program’s mission systematically explore, discover, characterize environmental impacts submarine volcanism on ocean physical, chemical, biological processes. initially focused mid-ocean spreading centers PMEL’s “backyard” (i.e., Gorda, Juan de Fuca, Endeavour Ridges Northeast Pacific) where segment-scale surveys detected plumes water column above ridge crest that led numerous individual vent fields (see 2015, references therein). New technologies techniques were created and/or adapted address challenges finding studying these vents. Repeat visits sites documented spatial temporal changes, stimulating development new hypotheses about associated biogeochemical However, testing how broadly applicable would be a global scale required discovering far wider range geological settings, global-scale exploration requires significant resources.
