The incorporation of sex and gender (S/G) related factors is commonly acknowledged as a necessary step to advance towards more personalized diagnoses treatments for somatic, psychiatric, neurological diseases. Until now, most attempts integrate S/G-related have been reduced identifying average differences between females males in behavioral/ biological variables. present commentary questions this traditional approach by highlighting three main sets limitations: 1) Issues stemming from the use classic parametric methods compare means; 2) challenges ability means accurately represent data within groups groups; 3) mean comparisons impose results' binarization binary theoretical framework that precludes advancing precision medicine. Alternative free these limitations are also discussed. We hope arguments will contribute reflecting on how research S/G conducted could be improved.

An interactive Sex Inclusive Research Framework (SIRF) supports the evaluation of in vivo and ex research proposals to address risk sex bias preclinical research. The framework delivers a traffic light classification, indicating whether proposal is appropriate, risky, or insufficient with regard inclusion. This tool designed for use by researchers, (animal) ethical review boards, funders generate rigorous reproducible assessment inclusion at level, thus helping resolve embedded

Recently implemented research policies requiring the inclusion of females and males have created an urgent need for effective training in how to account sex, some cases gender, biomedical studies. Here, we evaluated three sets publicly available online materials on this topic: (1) Integrating Sex & Gender Health Research from Canadian Institutes (CIHR); (2) as a Biological Variable: A Primer United States National (NIH); (3) The Dimension Biomedical Research, developed part "Leading Innovative measures reach gender Balance Activities" (LIBRA) European Commission. We reviewed each course with respect their coverage What is required by policy; Rationale Handling concepts "sex" "gender;" (4) design analysis; (5) Interpreting reporting data. All courses discussed importance including better generalize results, discover potential sex differences, tailor treatments men women. entangled nature operationalization downsides focusing more than other sources variation were minimally discussed. Notably, all explicitly endorsed invalid analytical approaches that produce bias toward false positive discoveries difference. Our analysis suggests revised or new incorporate four major topics: precise risks over-emphasis category, recognition complex entangled, rigorous study data analysis.
