Abstract Eveningness, a preference for later sleep and rise times, has been associated with number of negative outcomes in terms both physical mental health. A large body evidence links eveningness to Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). However, date, quantifying this association is limited. The current meta-analysis included 43 effect sizes from total 27,996 participants. Using random-effects model it was demonstrated that small size (Fisher’s Z = − 2.4, 95% CI [− 0.27. 0.21], p < 0.001). Substantial heterogeneity between studies observed, meta-regression analyses demonstrating significant mean age on the diurnal depression. There also potential publication bias as assessed by visual inspection funnel plots Egger’s test. depression magnitude heterogenous. better understanding mechanistic underpinnings linking suitably powered prospective allow causal inference are required.

The circadian rhythm plays a fundamental role in regulating biological functions, including sleep-wake preference, body temperature, hormonal secretion, food intake, and cognitive physical performance. Alterations can lead to chronic disease impaired sleep. rhythmicity human beings is represented by complex phenotype. Indeed, over 24-h period, person's preferred time be more active or sleep expressed the concept of morningness-eveningness. Three chronotypes are distinguished: Morning, Neither, Evening-types. Interindividual differences need considered reduce negative effects disruptions on health. In present review, we examine bi-directional influences rest-activity cycle pathologies disorders. We analyze main characteristics three chronotypes.

Background Actigraphy may provide a more valid assessment of sleep, circadian rhythm (CR), and physical activity (PA) than self-reported questionnaires, but has not been used widely to study the association with depression/anxiety their clinical characteristics. Methods Fourteen-day actigraphy data 359 participants current (n = 93), remitted 176), or no 90) composite international diagnostic interview diagnoses were obtained from Netherlands Study Depression Anxiety. Objective estimates included sleep duration (SD), efficiency, relative amplitude (RA) between day-time night-time activity, mid on free days (MSF), gross motor (GMA), moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Self-reported measures insomnia rating scale, SD, MSF, metabolic equivalent total, MVPA. Results Compared controls, individuals had significantly different objective, self-reported, CR: lower GMA (23.83 vs. 27.4 milli-gravity/day, p .022), MVPA (35.32 47.64 min/day, .023), RA (0.82 0.83, .033). In contrast, differed people compared those without disorders; reported both shorter longer SD insomnia. More depressive/anxiety symptoms number associated larger disturbances measures. Conclusion provides ecologically information CR, that enhances questionnaires. As severe comorbid forms showed lowest most CR disruptions, potential for adjunctive behavioral chronotherapy interventions should be explored, as well monitor treatment response such interventions.

The circadian rhythm is crucial for physiological and behavioral functions. Chronotype, which represents individual preferences activity performance, associated with human health issues, particularly psychiatric disorders. This narrative review, focuses on the relationship between chronotype mental disorders, provides an insight into potential mechanism. Recent evidence indicates that (1) evening a risk factor depressive disorders substance use whereas morning protective factor. (2) Evening individuals bipolar disorder tend to have more severe symptoms comorbidities. (3) only related anxiety symptoms. (4) schizophrenia remains unclear, despite increasing their link. (5) significantly eating majority of studies focused binge Furthermore, underlying mechanisms or influence factors are described in detail, including clock genes, brain characteristics, neuroendocrinology, light/dark cycle, social factors, psychological sleep These findings provide latest chronotypes serve as valuable reference researchers.

Abstract The first COVID-19 contagion wave caused unprecedented restraining measures worldwide. In Italy, a period of generalized lockdown involving home confinement the entire population was imposed for almost two months (9 March–3 May 2020). present is most extensive investigation aimed to unravel demographic, psychological, chronobiological, and work-related predictors sleep disturbances throughout pandemic emergency. A total 13,989 Italians completed web-based survey during (25 May). We collected demographic lockdown-related work changes information, we evaluated quality, insomnia depression symptoms, chronotype, perceived stress, anxiety using validated questionnaires. majority respondents reported negative impact on their delayed phase. highlighted an alarming prevalence lockdown. Main identified by regression models were: female gender, advanced age, being healthcare worker, living in southern duration, higher level depression, anxiety. evening chronotype emerged as vulnerability factor, while morning-type individuals showed lower predisposition psychological problems. Finally, working from associated with less severe disturbances. Besides confirming role specific factors developing disorders pandemic, propose that circadian typologies could react differently particular reduced social jetlag. Moreover, our results suggest play protective against development current
