Abstract The human relationship with nature is a topic that has been explored throughout history. More recently, the idea of connection to merged as an important transdisciplinary field study. Despite increased scholarly attention nature, notion disconnection from remains undertheorized and understudied. In this perspective article, we argue for more comprehensive understanding strengthen theories human‐nature relationships goes beyond individual considers social collective factors disconnection, including institutional, socio‐cultural power dimensions. Drawing on case insights, present ‘wheel disconnection’ illustrate how disconnections manifest across or societal meaning‐making processes, thereby problematizing existing research seeks create dualisms between positive negative impacts environment in isolation cultural political contexts. We do not seek discount practical efforts foster individual's by elevating disconnection. The relational turn in the academic literature on environmental values explores ontologies that rethink dualistic, hierarchical separations of humans from nature. In particular, consideration a plurality and ways which connect to nature has brought new insights dynamic interconnections between people, place processes, all highly relevant for world's sustainability challenges. However, many conceptualizations economic practices are still predominantly dualistic anthropocentric. To overcome this human-nature divide we propose conceptual integration with assemblages more-than-human relations, illustrated examples ongoing empirical research. These concepts offer way representing meaningful interrelationships, including humans, physical elements, materials (e.g. technologies, tools), immaterial entities sounds, lights, colors), other non-human beings. We argue such provides useful framework diverse economies as processes through non-humans co-constitute their interrelated livelihoods. Scholars have critiqued mainstream economic approaches to environmental valuation for decades. These critiques intensified with the increased prominence of in decision-making. This paper has three goals. First, we summarise prominent monetary valuation, drawing mostly on work Clive Spash, who worked extensively cost–benefit analysis early his career and then became one valuation's most thorough ardent critics. Second, we, as a group scholars study relational values, describe how values research engages addresses many valuation. Globally, around 0.78 billion rural people live in close proximity to forests and have been considered "forest-dwelling" and/or "forest dependent". Forest dependency has so far mainly studied material terms, while the non-material relationships addressed less frequently. Abstract Human–nature relationships are in a critical state, characterized by increasing environmental problems caused humans. Thus, it is essential to know how motivate people for protection. Motivation can arise from intrinsic, instrumental or relational perceptions of why nature valuable. The present study investigates empirically university students differ their view nature’s value. For this purpose, 13 different majors across Germany as well engaged the protection organization Health-for-Future (HfF) were surveyed via an online survey ( N = 1885). divided into four thematic groups (environmental, people-aligned, structures-exploring economics and political science). While all showed high levels agreement with intrinsic values, differed strongly perception nature. Environmental disciplines stronger view, followed people-aligned disciplines, while not directly associated either agreed less also values. HfF conservation highest level three value components. Further we found that gender plays role perception, women holding values than men. concludes among Germany, regardless major, there pluralistic understanding values: ecosystem services (instrumental values) both appreciated, whereas appear be more group specific.
