China is one of the major cotton producers globally with small farmers. Lepidopteran pests have always been main factor affecting production. To reduce occurrence and damage caused by lepidopteran pests, has employed a pest control method focused on planting Bt (Cry1Ac) since 1997. Chinese resistance management tactics for target bollworm pink bollworm, were also implemented. For polyphagous (multiple hosts) migratory such as (Helicoverpa armigera), “natural refuge” strategy, consisting non-Bt crops corn, soybean, vegetables, peanuts, other host crops, was adopted in Yellow River Region (YRR) Northwest (NR). single weak migration ability pest, (Pectinophora gossypiella), seed mix refuge strategy yields random mixture within fields 25% sowing second-generation (F2) seeds. According to field monitoring results more than 20 years China, practical (Bt failure) avoided, there no cases failure This indicated that this very successful. The government decided commercialize which will inevitably role natural refuges; therefore, paper discusses adjustments future directions strategies.

Abstract BACKGROUND The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda is a notorious invasive pest that poses serious threat to global agricultural production and food security. In China, Cotesia ruficrus has emerged as promising indigenous biological control agent for controlling FAW populations. this study, we conducted series of comprehensive experiments explore the effects C. parasitization on development nutrient metabolism larvae. RESULTS Parasitization by significantly inhibited larvae, reduced their intake more than 60%. Furthermore, concentrations carbohydrate triglyceride increased from third fifth day seventh after parasitization, respectively. However, both levels subsequently decreased during later stages. Transcriptome analysis showed there were 2096 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between parasitized non‐parasitized These DEGs found be primarily enriched in pathways related immune response, detoxification, lipid synthesis metabolism, protein metabolism. CONCLUSION Taken together, these results strongly indicate ability modulate ultimately benefiting successful parasitoid offspring. findings contribute our understanding intricate interactions host insects natural enemies provide valuable insights into sustainable effective strategies control. © 2025 Society Chemical Industry.

Widespread use of genetically engineered maize targeting the corn rootworm complex ( Diabrotica species) has raised concerns about insect resistance. Twelve years university field trial and farm survey data from 10 US Corn Belt states indicate that hybrids expressing toxins derived bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt maize) exhibited declining protection feeding with increased planting while pest pressures simultaneously decreased. The analysis revealed a tendency to overplant Bt maize, leading substantial economic losses; this was particularly striking in eastern states. Our findings highlight need go beyond “tragedy commons” perspective protect sustainable other crop biotechnology resources. We propose moving toward more diversified transparent seed supply.

The invasive fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) has widely colonized the tropics and subtropics of Asia. However, impact on succession Asiatic corn borer (ACB) Ostrinia furnacalis Pyralidae), a perennial dominant stemborer maize in these areas, remains elusive. Here we analyzed predation relationship, mimicked population competition, surveyed pest populations border area Yunnan (southwestern China).Laboratory assays revealed that 2nd to 6th instar larvae FAW preyed ACB, only 4th 5th ACB (1st only, 50% rate). 1st with theoretical maximum 14.5-58.8 individuals (per leaf) 4.8-25.6 tassel). When plants were infested eggs either or field cage trials, damage was 77.6% 50.6%, respectively, compared 77.9% 2.8% upon co-infestation. In surveys conducted 2019-2021, density significantly greater than which took great growth. Our findings indicate can outcompete at both individual levels, may result becoming pest. Resistance monitoring in the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, is necessary to accommodate commercial introduction and stewardship of Bt maize China. The susceptibility 56 O. furnacalis field populations, collected between 2015 2021 from belt regions China, Cry1Ab Cry1F toxins was determined. Neonate larvae (within 12 h after hatching) were placed on surface semi-artificial agar-free diet incorporating a series concentrations purified toxins, mortality evaluated 7d. median lethal concentration (LC50) values 0.05 0.37 µg/g (protein/diet) 0.10 1.22 µg/g, respectively. Although interpopulation variation observed, magnitude differences 5.8-fold 8.3-fold for Cry1F, These results suggested that observed reflect natural geographical response not caused by prior exposure selection pressures. Therefore, populations apparently still susceptible across their range within data established here will serve as comparative reference early warning signs field-evolved resistance cultivation

Transgenic crops have revolutionized insect pest control, but evolution of resistance by pests threatens their continued success. The primary strategy for combating to producing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) uses refuges non-Bt host plants allow survival susceptible insects. prevailing paradigm is that delay rare and recessively inherited. However, we discovered countered Bt cotton was neither nor recessive. In a 15-year field study the bollworm, frequency mutation conferring dominant surged 100-fold 2006 2016 yet did not rise 2020. The cultivation of genetically modified (GM) maize has aroused notable public concern related to the potential risks soil fauna caused by release foreign proteins. In this study, effects cultivating GM variety DBN9936, which exhibits expression Cry1Ab and EPSPS proteins, on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were evaluated under laboratory field conditions. No significant differences in survival, body weight, cocoon production, or hatching fed non-GM DBN318 detected after three consecutive generations a test. enzymatic activity assay results revealed no superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase (CAT) enzyme between varieties. Furthermore, exogenous proteins undetectable gut tissues raised with straw. imposed adverse species composition density two years during test, earthworm species, total number each did not significantly differ lines. On basis our findings, we concluded that DBN9936 does pose risk earthworms.
