In the past decade there has been increased interest in research on color and psychological functioning. Important advances have made theoretical work empirical work, but are also important weaknesses both areas that must be addressed for literature to continue develop apace. this article, I provide brief overviews of area, each instance beginning with a historical background recent advancements, proceeding an evaluation focused guidelines future research. conclude by reiterating functioning is at nascent stage development, recommending patience prudence regarding conclusions about theory, findings, real-world application.

Humans live in a 24-hour environment, which light and darkness follow diurnal pattern. Our circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) hypothalamus, is entrained to solar day via pathway from retina synchronises our internal biological rhythms. Rhythmic variations ambient illumination impact behaviours such as rest during sleep activity wakefulness well their underlying processes. Rather recently, availability of artificial has substantially changed especially evening night hours. This may increase risk developing rhythm sleep-wake disorders (CRSWD), are often caused by misalignment endogenous rhythms external light-dark cycles. While exact relationship between CRSWD remains be established, nocturnal been shown alter humans. On other hand, can also used an effective noninvasive therapeutic option with little no side effects, improve sleep, mood general well-being. article reviews current state knowledge regarding effects on rhythms, sleep, mood.

To date, most current reports on the development and optimization of artificial lighting sources have focused energy performance levels limited color qualities white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, these properties are insufficient in terms representing all required when adjusting LEDs for healthy smart lighting. Here, we introduce essential advanced figures merit pertaining to circadian as well vision quality. We compare possible commercialized lighting, daylight four-package which consist long-wavelength pass dichroic filter (LPDF)-capped, phosphor-converted red, amber green (pc-LEDs) a blue LED. show that tunable produce effect melatonin suppression/secretion, high quality perception/reproduction, efficiency savings LED market. Researchers Korea discovered carefully designed can help optimize an individual's rhythm. Ji Hye Oh co-workers from Kookmin University studied LEDs, filter. They compared devices with variety traditional forms found such designs yield luminous efficacy, excellent rendering regulating secretion melatonin. The suggest could play important role creating systems maintain good health, bring provide optimal visualization colors.

Light, including artificial light, has a range of effects on human physiology and behavior can therefore alter when inappropriately timed. One example potential light-induced disruption is the effect light circadian organization, production several hormone rhythms. Changes in light-dark exposure (e.g., by nonday occupation or transmeridian travel) shift timing system such that internal rhythms become desynchronized from both external environment internally with each other, impairing our ability to sleep wake at appropriate times compromising physiologic metabolic processes. Light also have direct acute neuroendocrine systems, for example, suppressing melatonin synthesis elevating cortisol may untoward long-term consequences. For these reasons, National Institute Environmental Health Sciences convened workshop diverse group scientists consider how best conduct research possible connections between lighting health. According participants workshop, there are three broad areas effort need be addressed. First basic biophysical molecular genetic mechanisms phototransduction circadian, neuroendocrine, neurobehavioral regulation. Second consequences disrupting regulatory processes as production, particularly melatonin, normal neoplastic tissue growth dynamics. Third disease occurrence prognosis, prevention treatment could improved application this knowledge.
