This review motivates and synthesizes research efforts in neuroscience-inspired artificial intelligence biomimetic computing terms of mortal computation. Specifically, we characterize the notion mortality by recasting ideas biophysics, cybernetics, cognitive science a theoretical foundation for sentient behavior. We frame computation thesis through Markov blanket formalism circular causality entailed inference, learning, selection. The ensuing framework -- underwritten free energy principle could prove useful guiding construction unconventional connectionist computational systems, neuromorphic intelligence, chimeric agents, including organoids, which stand to revolutionize long-term future embodied, enactive cognition research.

How Physical Information Underlies Causation and the Emergence of Systems at all Biological Levels DOI Creative Commons

To bring clarity, the term 'information' is resolved into three distinct meanings: physical pattern, statistical relations and knowledge about things. In parallel, kinds of 'causation' are resolved: action force constrained by pattern (efficient cause), cybernetic (formal cause) inference. Cybernetic causation an expression fundamental (necessary) logical relations, inference phenomenological, but information proposed as what actually happens in world. Examples latter given to illustrate underlying material dynamics a range biological systems from appearance 'synergistic information' among multiple variables (mainly neuroscience); positional multicellular development; organisational structure ecological communities, especially incorporating niche construction theory. A rigorous treatment multi-level provided well explanation causal power non-physical structure, interaction networks. The focus on particular echoing insights Howard Pattee, provides more physically grounded view emergence, downward concept 'closure efficient causation', all now prevalent approach biology.

Abstract Eating is a fundamental behavior in which all organisms must engage order to procure the material and energy from their environment that they need maintain themselves. Since controlling eating requires procuring, processing, assessing information, it constitutes cognitive activity provides productive domain for pursuing biology as proposed by Ladislav Kováč. In agreement with Kováč, we argue cognition fundamentally grounded chemical signaling processing. To support this thesis, adopt Cisek’s strategy of phylogenetic refinement, focusing on two animal phyla, Porifera Placozoa, do not have neurons, muscles, or an alimentary canal, but nonetheless coordinate cells multiple types eat. We review what research has revealed so far about how these animals gather process information control behavior.
