Microbial cell factories, renowned for their economic and environmental benefits, have emerged as a key trend in academic industrial areas, particularly the fermentation of natural compounds. Among these, plant-derived terpenes stand out significant class bioactive products. The large-scale production such terpenes, exemplified by artemisinic acid—a crucial precursor to artemisinin—is now feasible through microbial factories. In two-phase technology has been widely applied due its unique advantages. It facilitates situ product extraction or adsorption, effectively mitigating detrimental impact accumulation on cells, thereby significantly bolstering efficiency terpenes. This paper reviews latest developments system applications, focusing also discusses mechanisms influencing biosynthesis Moreover, we introduce some new techniques, currently unexplored terpene fermentation, with aim providing more thoughts explorations future applications technology. Lastly, discuss several challenges application systems, especially downstream processing.

Flavors and fragrances (F&F) are interesting organic compounds in chemistry. These widely used the food, cosmetic, medical industries. Enzymatic synthesis exhibits several advantages over natural extraction chemical preparation, including a high yield, stable quality, mildness, environmental friendliness. To date, many oxidoreductases hydrolases have been to biosynthesize F&F. Ene-reductases (ERs) class of biocatalysts that can catalyze asymmetric reduction α,β-unsaturated offer superior specificity selectivity; therefore, ERs increasingly considered an ideal alternative their counterparts. This review summarizes research progress on use F&F past 20 years, achievements various scholars, differences similarities among findings, discussions future trends related ERs. We hope this inspire researchers promote development biotechnology industry.
