In recent years, there has been growing interest in harnessing anaerobic digestion technology for resource recovery from waste streams. This approach evolved beyond its traditional role energy generation to encompass the production of valuable carboxylic acids, especially volatile fatty acids (VFAs) like acetic acid, propionic and butyric acid. VFAs hold great potential various industries biobased applications due their versatile properties. Despite increasing global demand, over 90% are currently produced synthetically petrochemicals. Realizing large-scale VFA streams offers significant eco-friendly opportunities but comes with several key challenges. These include low yields, unstable acid compositions, complex expensive purification methods, post-processing needs. Among these, yield composition stand out as most critical obstacles impacting economic viability competitiveness. paper seeks offer a comprehensive view combining complementary modeling approaches, including kinetic microbial modeling, understand workings communities metabolic pathways production, enhance efficiency, regulate profiles through integration omics bioreactor data.

Treating protein-rich wastewater using cost-effective and simple-structured single-stage reactors presents several challenges. In this study, we applied an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (AnSBR) to treat from a slaughterhouse. We focused on identifying the key factors influencing removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) settling performance sludge. The AnSBR achieved maximum total COD 90%, protein degradation efficiency exceeding 80%, methane conversion over 70% at organic loading rates up 6.2 g L-1 d-1. found that variations in both rate within hydraulic retention time buffer tank had significant effect removal. reactor, which determined ammonification efficiencies residual carbohydrate concentrations liquid, affected sludge settleability. Furthermore, genus Clostridium sensu stricto 1, known as protein- lipids-degraders, was predominant reactor. Statistical analysis showed correlation between core microbiome efficiency, highlighting importance governing process treatment. Our results will provide valuable insights optimise design operation for efficient treatment wastewater.

In the food industry, confusion stemming from expiration and date labels contributes to unnecessary waste, underscoring growing need for innovative freshness sensors. This study presents a novel, cost-effective, environmentally friendly dual-mode ammonia sensor tailored real-time quality monitoring of protein-rich products. Utilizing naturally occurring anthocyanin extracted Clitoria ternatea reinforced with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in paper-based colorimetric system, demonstrates heightened sensitivity gas, key indicator spoilage foods. Integration graphene nanoplatelets layer enables additional resistive gas sensing capabilities. The practicality versatility fabricated are enhanced by integrating near-field communication (NFC) technology, which facilitates batteryless wireless response transmission. fabrication process involves straightforward, low-temperature solution route utilizing dip-coating brush-coating methods. incorporation PVA significantly amplifies response, evidenced 44% increase total color change compared non-PVA sensor. augmentation results more pronounced change, is readily discernible naked eye. developed sensor, equipped NFC, successfully applied monitor shrimp freshness, demonstrating distinct changes NFC tag readability release during spoilage. With its attributes cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, simplicity, capabilities, this offers promising widespread adoption industry. work advancing providing versatile tool ensure safety perishable goods.
