Abstract Granular sludge is a promising biotechnology to treat sewage contaminated with pharmaceuticals due its increased toxicity resistance. In this context, study evaluated the potential of Ca2+ as granulation precursor and how pharmaceutical compounds (loratadine, prednisone, fluconazole, fenofibrate, betamethasone, 17α-ethinyl estradiol, ketoprofen) affect granulation. Continuous intermittent dosages in presence absence were evaluated. The results showed that addition reduces time for anaerobic granulation, did not impair 10% granules presented mean diameters greater than 2.11 mm within 93 days dosage pharmaceuticals’ presence. contrast, no higher 2.0 observed addition. pharmaceuticals' may have created stress condition microbial community, contributing more EPS production It was also verified decrease organic matter, total alkalinity, volatile fatty acids removals. 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed taxa resistance recalcitrant when added. Besides, efficiency granular bioreactor (EGSB) removal, prednisone effectively removed.

This chapter is a critical review of biological sewage treatment, an important and integral part the treatment plant. Important monitoring water quality parameters in systems such as solid retention time, dissolved oxygen concentration, food-to-microorganism ratio, organic loading rate, pH, temperature are discussed. Several option for system including aerobic processes, anoxic anaerobic processes reviewed along its process chemistry. Recent developments each technology also outlined. Lastly, challenges opportunities with current addressed to be filled up by future research seeking most cost-effective efficient treatment.
