The transition of Agri-Food Supply Chains (AFSC) toward sustainable patterns able to secure safe, quality, and affordable food whilst preserving natural anthropogenic ecosystems is a key challenge this century. Increasing production distribution operations' transparency impact visibility uncovers hidden complexities the ecosystem's externalities. To attempt, paper introduces novel Chain digital twin (AFSC-DT) virtualize agricultural, processing, warehousing, operations holistically from-field-to-consumer estimate economic, logistic, environmental, safety, nutritional indicators associated with any order, assumed as functional unit. AFSC-DT behaves control tower, providing multi-dimensional dashboard labels enhance practitioners' consumers' knowledge FSC entities operations. practitioner's drives top-down operational tactical feedback controls through real-time monitoring a-posteriori performance analysis, consumers, their informed choices, perform strategic bottom-up pressure on industry redesign. A what-if simulation analysis conducted over four virtual scenarios within regional horticultural AFSC proves how aids decision-making across echelons, stimulating virtuous cycle favoring progressive more patterns.

Digital twin technology is expected to transform agriculture. By creating the virtual representation of a physical entity, it assists food producers in monitoring, predicting, and optimizing production process remotely even autonomously. However, progress this area relatively slower than industries like manufacturing. A systematic investigation agricultural digital twins’ current status imperative. With seventy published papers, work elaborated on studies targeting twins from overall trends, focused areas (including domains, processes, topics), reference architectures, open questions, which could help scholars examine their research agenda support further development

Historically, plant and crop sciences have been quantitative fields that intensively use measurements modeling. Traditionally, researchers choose between two dominant modeling approaches: mechanistic growth models or data-driven, statistical methodologies. At the intersection of both paradigms, a novel approach referred to as “ simulation intelligence ”, has emerged powerful tool for comprehending controlling complex systems, including plants crops. This work explores transformative potential science community nine motifs, from understanding molecular processes optimizing greenhouse control. Many these concepts, such surrogate agent-based modeling, gained prominence in sciences. In contrast, some open-ended optimization program synthesis, still need be explored further. The motifs can potentially revolutionize breeding precision farming towards more sustainable food production.
