Biodegradable packaging offers an affordable and sustainable solution to global pollution, particularly in developing countries with limited recycling infrastructure. Starch is well suited develop biodegradable packages for foods due its wide availability simple, low-tech production process. Although the development of starch-based documented, most studies focus on laboratory stages formulation plasticization, leaving gaps understanding key phases such as raw material conditioning, industrial-scale molding, post-production processes, storage. This work evaluates value chain countries. It addresses challenges, equipment, process conditions at each stage, highlighting critical role moisture resistance final product’s functionality. A particular placed replacing single-use plastic packaging, which dominates food industries regions agricultural economies rich biodiversity. comprehensive analysis production, a detailed stage overall process, should contribute more scalable solutions, replacement packages, helping protect vulnerable biodiverse from growing impact waste.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to understand how cactus age affects the physicochemical and technological properties of mucilage biopolymeric films. Cladodes Nopalea cochenillifera (MIU) Opuntia stricta (OEM) were harvested at 9 months (young) 18 (old) age. The epidermis was removed, aquiferous parenchyma crushed mixed with ethyl alcohol (2:3). After homogenization, dried, pulverized analysed physicochemically. powder obtained hydrated, a plasticizer added, resulting in formation polymeric films after 24 h drying an oven. produced characterized for physicochemical, optical, structural, mechanical thermal properties. Older cladodes presented higher yield (3.16%), as well pH (5.26) phenolic compounds (249.82 mg 100 g −1 DM), characteristics that are advantageous incorporation into foods. Young exhibited levels soluble carbohydrates (27.67 derived from these less transparent (5.75%) permeable (15.09 mm m −2 d kPa ), addition displaying water contact angle improved stability. XRD spectra SEM micrographs showed have more crystalline homogeneous structure, enhancing their strength (0.09 MPa). Therefore, young cacti greater potential application within packaging industry.
