Research on using biochar for environmental applications has witnessed unprecedented advances in the past decade. Biochar is universally considered one of best alternatives to store carbon fight global warming. Thus, sequential use remediation compatible with sequestration receiving growing attention. One reasons such huge interest possibility engineer targeted properties (e.g., surface area and chemistry) relevant existing issues. These can be achieved by selecting appropriate raw materials, processing conditions, carbonization technology, postproduction modification approaches. The objective this review summarize strategies enhance its services water purification, air/gas cleaning, construction soil amendments) corresponding results material these applications. main methods enhancing reviewed include activation (physical chemical), oxidation, metal oxide modification, metal-free heteroatom doping, biological modification. Both modified unmodified biochars have been used amendments as adsorbents pollutants aqueous phase removal P N, heavy metals, organic pollutants), gas biogas cleaning), a catalyst, an additive improving anaerobic digestion, admixture cementitious/construction promising all cases. New opportunities are being reported science production, advances.

Nitrogen and phosphorus play essential roles in ecosystems organisms. However, with the development of industry agriculture recent years, excessive N P have flowed into water bodies, leading to eutrophication, algal proliferation, red tides, which are harmful aquatic Biochar has a high specific surface area, abundant functional groups, porous structure, can effectively adsorb nitrogen water, thus reducing environmental pollution, achieving reusability elements. This article provides an overview preparation biochar, modification methods advancements adsorption by factors influencing as well mechanisms. Furthermore, difficulties encountered future research directions regarding biochar were proposed, providing references for application adsorption.
