The widespread use of plastics determines the inevitable human exposure to its by-products, including microplastics (MPs), which enter organism mainly by ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Once internalised, MPs may pass across cell membranes translocate different body sites, triggering specific cellular mechanisms. Hence, potential health impairment caused internalisation accumulation is prime concern, as confirmed numerous studies reporting evident toxic effects in various animal models, marine organisms, lines. In this pilot single-centre observational prospective study, breastmilk samples collected from N. 34 women were analysed Raman Microspectroscopy, and, for first time, MP contamination was found 26 out samples. detected microparticles classified according their shape, colour, dimensions, chemical composition. most abundant composed polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, with sizes ranging 2 12 µm. data statistically relation patients' (age, personal care products containing plastic compounds, consumption fish/shellfish, beverages, food packaging), but no significant relationship found, suggesting that ubiquitous presence makes inevitable.

This literature review addresses the presence of plastic in domestic wastewater, an increasingly important facet widespread use and its detrimental effects on environment, with a focus microplastics (MPs) sewage sludge their implications for circular economy. Extensive research has been conducted occurrence MPs wastewater treatment plants. Sewage is byproduct such plants that are widely used agricultural other sectors but may contain emerging contaminants, including MPs, can pose significant risk to environment. The highlights high concentrations underscores need appropriate disposal methods prevent soil contamination. also detrimentally interact as heavy metals organophosphate esters. While extraction technologies exist remove from implementation subject technical economic considerations. Future should optimization efficacy these ensure safe management. Given levels contaminants found sludge, it crucial implement enable sustainable disposal. By acknowledging challenges developing solutions, we mitigate environmental impacts promote waste management practices.

The quantity of plastic materials produced worldwide is progressively increasing. For instance, annual global production has increased from 1.5 to 390.7 million metric tons 1950 2021. Meanwhile, inefficient management strategies have resulted in huge waste disposal (i.e., the form macro-, micro-, and nanoplastics) environment a hostile manner. In particular, such uncontrollable discarding paves entrance pollution into as microplastics (μPs) after degradation macroplastics. this respect, marine environments are most typical regions prone μP pollution. These ubiquitous emerging pollutants can also adsorb other pollutants, organic materials, toxic heavy metal ions, pathogens, transfer them living organisms. main theme present study compile information on how affects ecosystem, with particular emphasis following key factors: (i) types sources μPs, particularly those entering sinks; (ii) mechanisms leading μPs' degradation; (iii) poisonous effects μPs biota humans; (iv) fate environment, including their transportation routes deposition modes, (v) recent developments characterization, separation, removal environment. presented here would be practical for developing effective risk plans.
