In Earth's atmosphere, the surface tension of sub-micron aerosol particles is suspected to affect their efficiency in becoming cloud droplets. But this quantity cannot be measured directly and inferred from chemical compounds present aerosols. Amphiphilic surfactants have been evidenced aerosols but experimental information on properties mixtures with other components lacking. This work explores experimentally aqueous amphiphilic (SDS, Brij35, TritonX100, TritonX114, CTAC) inorganic salts (NaCl, (NH4)2SO4) soluble organic acids (oxalic glutaric acid) using pendant droplet tensiometry. Contrary what could expected, systematically enhanced rather than reduced it, by further lowering and, some cases, CMC. Furthermore, all studied were strongly non-ideal, even displaying synergism, thus demonstrating that common assumption ideality for not valid. The molecular interactions between mixture either bulk (salting out), mixed monolayer (synergy tension) or micelles CMC) need included when describing such mixtures.

In this paper, the thermodynamic properties of binary mixtures surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HA)–sodium deoxycholate (DC) and dodecyltrimethylammonium (DA)–sodium in an aqueous NaCl solution (0.3 mol kg–1) temperature interval T = 273.1–323.1 K are examined. mixed micelles such as HA–DC DA–DC, there synergistic interactions between structurally different micellar building units. The dependence molar excess Gibbs free energy formation pseudophase on fractions (gE f(xi)) is a symmetric function (a first-order Margules function) where entropy not zero, i.e., strict theory regular does apply. If phenomenon enthalpy–entropy compensation valid for each partial process during (at constant temperature) surfactant mole fraction from initial mixture, ratio enthalpy certain RST constant, then gE f(xi) function. Both investigated pseudophases solubilization daidzein (D) exhibit relation to D with system monocomponent surfactants. energies DA–DC negative, which means that solubilizate more thermodynamically stable than systems containing D.

Aerosol and aqueous particles are ubiquitous in Earth's atmosphere play key roles geochemical processes such as natural chemical cycles, cloud fog formation, air pollution, visibility, climate forcing, etc. The surface tension of atmospheric can affect their size distribution, condensational growth, evaporation, exchange chemicals with the atmosphere, which, turn, important above-mentioned processes. However, because measuring this quantity is challenging, its role was dismissed for decades. Over last 15 years, field research has seen some tremendous developments rapidly evolving. This review presents state-of-the-art subject focusing on experimental approaches. It also a unique inventory adsorption isotherms over 130 mixtures organic compounds water relevance model development validation. Potential future areas seeking to better determine particles, constrain laboratory investigations, or understand various processes, discussed. We hope that appeals not only scientists but researchers from other fields, who could help identify new approaches solutions current challenges.
