In
Earth's
atmosphere,
the
surface
tension
of
sub-micron
aerosol
particles
is
suspected
to
affect
their
efficiency
in
becoming
cloud
droplets.
But
this
quantity
cannot
be
measured
directly
and
inferred
from
chemical
compounds
present
aerosols.
Amphiphilic
surfactants
have
been
evidenced
aerosols
but
experimental
information
on
properties
mixtures
with
other
components
lacking.
This
work
explores
experimentally
aqueous
amphiphilic
(SDS,
Brij35,
TritonX100,
TritonX114,
CTAC)
inorganic
salts
(NaCl,
(NH4)2SO4)
soluble
organic
acids
(oxalic
glutaric
acid)
using
pendant
droplet
tensiometry.
Contrary
what
could
expected,
systematically
enhanced
rather
than
reduced
it,
by
further
lowering
and,
some
cases,
CMC.
Furthermore,
all
studied
were
strongly
non-ideal,
even
displaying
synergism,
thus
demonstrating
that
common
assumption
ideality
for
not
valid.
The
molecular
interactions
between
mixture
either
bulk
(salting
out),
mixed
monolayer
(synergy
tension)
or
micelles
CMC)
need
included
when
describing
such
mixtures.

Aerosol
and
aqueous
particles
are
ubiquitous
in
Earth's
atmosphere
