ABSTRACT Creative problem‐solving skills are essential for navigating complex, non‐routine challenges, enabling individuals to create unique goals, execute innovative procedures and generate original outcomes. While the link between metacognitive creativity of outcomes was established only recently, further exploration is required understand their interplay in complex problem‐solving. This explanatory sequential mixed‐methods study investigated role metacognition solving two ill‐defined tasks: an experimental Product Improvement Task ecologically valid semestral essay. Seventeen undergraduates performed tasks provided monitoring judgments. Based on originality accuracy judgments, three clusters students were identified: skilled unaware underestimating high performance, unskilled overestimating low but aware accurately performance. Subsequent in‐depth interviews essay writing process each cluster. Skilled effectively utilized knowledge, created a problem representation, gathered synthesized new information develop drafts that debugged evaluated. Unskilled exhibited deficits strategy knowledge had poor skills. self‐efficacy motivation perform. These findings emphasize need targeted motivational interventions different students.

ABSTRACT How are ideas born? Contrary to commonly held beliefs, creative performance, like any goal‐oriented action, requires understanding and managing one's own cognitive processes – thus, efficient metacognition. Recently, a systematic framework of metacognition (CMC) has been proposed, assuming the relevance metacognitive knowledge, monitoring, control in performance. Here, we provide first comprehensive empirical examination this conception. Specifically, an online sample ( N = 425) performed divergent thinking (DT) tasks gave insight relevant aspects during task The study revealed that all three proposed components CMC played independent roles enhancing including creativity fluency. Among these components, showed strongest positive association with As expected, was especially imminent performance but some real‐life creativity. These findings evidence postulated support and, lesser degree, behavior. In discussion, delve deeper into specific subcomponents touch upon differences between self‐regulation

Creative ideation tasks are typically ill-defined and thus should benefit from metacognition. However, the role of metacognitive processes―especially control―in creative appears understudied. Therefore, we conducted an online study investigating relationship between different aspects control divergent thinking (DT) performance. In line with recently proposed metacognition framework , devised measures that delineate at levels task, performance, responses: Metacognitive task level was assessed in terms attention focus devoted to each task; performance goal-directedness employed strategy; response how effectively uncreative ideas were screened out. We observed substantial individual differences all three as well first evidence their validity. Importantly, independently predicted higher DT creativity. Additional analyses suggested effects may extend behavior, partly mediated by DT. sum, this provides empirical support for relevance distinguishable

Competencies related to the evaluation of own cognitive processes, called metacognitive monitoring, are crucial as they help decide whether persist in or desist from efforts. One most well-known phenomena this context-the Dunning-Kruger effect-is that less skilled people tend overestimate their performance. This effect has been reported for various kinds performance including creativity. More recently, however, it suggested phenomenon could be a statistical artifact caused by better-than-average and regression toward mean.
