Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule with multiple functions in plants. Since the discovery of melatonin plants, numerous studies have provided insight into biosynthesis, catabolism, and physiological biochemical this important molecule. Here, we describe biosynthesis from tryptophan, as well its various degradation pathways The identification putative receptor plants has led to hypothesis that hormone involved regulating plant growth, aerial organ development, root morphology, floral transition. universal antioxidant activity role preserving chlorophyll might explain anti-senescence capacity aging leaves. An impressive amount research focused on modulating postharvest fruit ripening by expression ethylene-related genes. Recent evidence also indicated plant's response biotic stress, cooperating other phytohormones well-known molecules such reactive oxygen species nitric oxide. Finally, great progress been made towards understanding how alleviates effects abiotic stresses, including salt, drought, extreme temperature, heavy metal stress. Given diverse roles, propose master regulator

Melatonin acts as a crucial signaling and antioxidant molecule with multiple physiological functions in organisms. To explore effects of exogenous melatonin on postharvest browning its possible mechanisms litchi fruit, 'Ziniangxi' fruits were treated an aqueous solution at 0.4 mM then stored 25 °C for 8 days. The results revealed that strongly suppressed pericarp delayed discoloration during storage. treatment reduced relative membrane-leakage rate inhibited the generation superoxide radicals (O2-·), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA). markedly promoted accumulation endogenous melatonin; loss total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins; enhanced activities enzymes, including dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, 1.11.1.11), glutathione reductase (GR, 1.6.4.2). By contrast, browning-related enzymes polyphenoloxidase (PPO, 1.10.3.1) (POD, 1.11.1.7) reduced. In addition, up-regulated expression four genes encoding repair oxidized proteins, LcMsrA1, LcMsrA2, LcMsrB1, LcMsB2. These findings indicate delay senescence by harvested fruit could be attributed to maintenance redox homeostasis improvement capacity modulation oxidatively damaged proteins.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a nontoxic biological molecule produced in pineal gland of animals and different tissues plants. It an important secondary messenger molecule, playing vital role coping with various abiotic biotic stresses. serves as antioxidant postharvest technology enhances the life fruits vegetables. The application exogenous melatonin alleviated reactive oxygen species cell damage induced by stresses means repairing mitochondria. Additionally, regulation stress-specific genes activation pathogenesis-related protein enzymes under stress makes it more versatile molecule. Besides that, crosstalk other phytohormones inroads to utilize against non-testified conditions, such viruses nematodes. Furthermore, strategies have been discussed induce endogenous activity order sustain plant system. Our review highlighted diverse roles system, which could be useful enhancing environmental friendly crop production ensure food safety.
