This review highlights the current level of waste plastics treatment through thermal and its potential for African countries. Improved options are needed to convert over 40% mismanaged in Africa generate electrical chemical energy. The values measured calculated energy yields from high-quality data compared such as pyrolysis, gasification, incineration, catalytic plasma gasification. investigation revealed that, production, gasification offers best valuable product yield single-use with a promising liquid output up 80% low heating value (LHV) 44 MJ/kg, gas 6–7% 48 MJ/m3, solid 10–20%. products obtained at this quality could be used fuel conventional gas/diesel engine electricity generation. For multi-layered composite plastics, recovery approach producing syngas LHV 10.8 MJ/m3 consisting H2 CO weight fraction 62.5% 34%, respectively. feasible presented based on profiles selected regions Africa.

Estimates show that the world generates around 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) each year, which 33% is not managed properly. This demonstrates urgent need for strategies to address growing rate MSW generation worldwide. Municipal collection, treatment and final deposition are among important issues in agendas public administration. Brazil, like other developing countries has develop its political policies handle efficiently treatment. A significant part municipalities still facing serious difficulties eradicate dumping practices implement adequate routes. As a contribution, this review presents actual scenario future national plan period 2024-2040 including efforts minimization, recycling, sanitation, closure polluted landfills, incentives recovery landfill gas, composting, energy from MSW. Recent data shows generated Brazil 2022 about 81.8 million 76.1 were collected (93.0%). Of MSW, 46.4 (61%) deposited sanitary landfills 29.7 (39%) sent dumps. The recycling composting activities 1.12 (or 1.47%) 127,500 0.168%), respectively. new National Plan Solid Waste, Planares, establishes targets, elimination controlled dumps sites starting 2024 increase recovered 48.1% by 2040.

Abstract Global solid waste generation is expected to double by 2050 from the present annual level of 2.01 metric ton. Traditional biowaste treatment methods, such as landfilling and incineration, cannot meet need deal with gigantic amounts reduce environmental harm. This review critically evaluates existing sustainable management strategies highlighting their role in transitioning a “reuse recovery” paradigm. Sustainable refers conserving resources protecting human health, society, environment. In this context, examines current advancements potential trends using widely available novel applications produce key biofuels (such biogas biodiesel) corrosion inhibitors, asbestos‐free brake pads, nutrient‐rich functional foods, bio‐cement, bio‐based fertilizer, biodegradable plastic. Among these, biowaste‐to‐energy conversion (e.g., production) plastic synthesis emerge particularly impactful due scalability address both reduction resource recovery goals. The strategic utilization into products holds significant promise mitigating sustainability problems, offering renewable alternatives that are free harmful additives.

Biomass gasification technology is a promising process to produce stable gas with wide range of applications, from direct use the synthesis value-added biochemicals and biofuels. Due high capital/operating costs necessity for prudent management thermal energy exchanges in biomass process, it important advanced sustainability metrics ensure that environmental other factors are addressed beneficially. Consequently, various engineering techniques being used make decisions on endogenous exogenous parameters processes find most efficient, viable, sustainable operations conditions. Among available approaches, exergy methods have attracted much attention due their scientific rigor accounting performance, cost, impact systems. Therefore, this review devoted critically reviewing numerically scrutinizing analyzing First, bibliometric analysis conducted systematically identify research themes trends exergy-based assessments Then, effects composition, reactor type, gasifying agent, operating efficiency thoroughly investigated mechanistically discussed. Unlike oxygen, nitrogen, ash contents biomass, positively correlated carbon hydrogen biomass. A mixed medium (CO2 steam) provides higher values. The downdraft fixed-bed gasifier exhibits highest among Finally, opportunities limitations aspects systems outlined guide future domain.
