Abstract An effect of climate change is the expansion drylands in temperate regions, predicted to affect microbial biodiversity. Since photosynthetic organisms are at base ecosystem’s trophic networks, we compared an endolithic desiccation-tolerant Chroococcidiopsis cyanobacteria isolated from gypsum rocks Atacama Desert with a freshwater desiccation-sensitive Synechocystis. We sought whether some acclimation traits response desiccation and temperature variations were shared, evaluate potential species possibly become resilient future arid conditions. When varies, Synechocystis tunes acyl composition its lipids, via homeoviscous mechanism known adjust membrane fluidity, whereas no such occurs Chroococcidiopsis. Vice versa, combined study photosynthesis pigment content shows that remodels components keeps optimal capacity all temperatures, unable adjustment. Upon on surface, rapidly revive, capable recover after three weeks. Using X-ray diffraction, found evidence could use water extracted crystals conditions as surrogate for missing water. The sulfolipid sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol becomes prominent lipid both dehydrated cyanobacteria, highlighting overlooked function this lipid. minimal level monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, which may be essential recovery process. Results support two independent adaptation strategies have evolved these cope increase suggest possible scenarios biodiversity triggered by change.

In this paper, we present a novel terahertz plasmonic sensing concept that utilizes metasurface coupler to excite spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPs) modes on graphene strips. The dielectric unit cell consists of two silicon cylindrical rods with different radii quartz substrate. Vertically incident waves are deflected by the metasurface, resulting in transverse wave-vector within substrate matches SSPs supported This enables efficient excitation strips surface, leading absorption resonances range 0.420–0.430 THz high quality (Q) factor 152. We then applied device for refractive index sensing, and investigation results indicate Q spectrum experience shifts changes target substance, sensitivity 110 GHz/RIU. designed structure study exhibits significant potential applications trace substance detection.

Although many conventional molecular immuno-based techniques are widely used these purposes, they still have some drawbacks concerning sensitivity, safety, laboriousness, long-term collection data analysis. Therefore, new rapidly emerging approaches been introduced such as terahertz (THz)-based technologies. In this contribution, we summarize THz radiation technology, its solutions applications high-sensitivity detection.
