The widespread occurrence of microplastic has invaded the environment to an extent that it appears be present throughout globe. This review investigated global abundance and distribution microplastics in marine freshwater ecosystems. Furthermore, issues challenges have been addressed for better findings studies. Findings revealed accumulation varies geographically, with locations, hydrodynamic conditions, environmental pressure, time. From this review, is crucial proper regulations are proposed implemented order reduce aquatic environment. Without appropriate law regulations, pollution will eventually threaten human livelihood.

Although microplastics are a recognised pollutant in marine environments, less attention has been directed towards freshwater ecosystems despite their greater proximity to possible plastic sources. Here, we quantify the presence of microplastic particles (MPs) river organisms upstream and downstream five UK Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTWs). MPs were identified approximately 50% macroinvertebrate samples collected (Baetidae, Heptageniidae Hydropsychidae) at concentrations up 0.14 MP mg tissue-1 they occurred all sites. abundance was associated with biomass taxonomic family, but independently feeding guild biological traits such as habitat affinity ecological niche. There no increase ingestion WwTW discharges averaged across sites, macroinvertebrates marginally increased where effluent contributed more total runoff declined increasing discharge. The ubiquity within this case study reveals potential risk from entering riverine food webs through least two pathways, involving detritivory filter-feeding, recommend closer future research.

The analysis, prevention, and removal of microplastics (MPs) pollution in water is identified as one major problem the world currently facing. MPs can be directly released to or formed by degradation bigger plastics. Nowadays, it estimated that annually between 4 12 million tonnes plastic go into seas oceans—with a forecast for them outweigh amount fish 2050. Based on existing studies, characterization waters still remaining challenges because they easily confused with organic other types matter. Consequently, there an urgent necessity establish pathways chemical identification MP nature. In this perspective, recent techniques instrumentation (Raman Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies microscopies, pyrolysis thermal desorption gas chromatography, imaging techniques, etc.) are discussed including considerations multidimensionality problem. This perspective also summarizes provides updated data sources occurrence, transport fate aquatic ecosystems, well influencing conditions factors affecting dispersal. Additionally, how engineering biotechnological tools, such advanced treatments, would help control, reduce, even eliminate near future outlined.

Given the persistence of microplastics in environment and their potential toxicity to ecosystems, understanding likely microplastic accumulation ‘hotspots’ rivers is urgently needed. To contribute this challenge, paper reports results a survey from heavily urbanised catchment, River Tame four its tributaries, which flows through city Birmingham, UK. All sediment sampled was found contain with an average abundance 165 particles kg−1. While urban areas generally have greater as compared rural, there no simple relationship between numbers population density or proximity wastewater treatment sites. The greatest change due presence lake along course Tame—i.e., flow velocities are reduced on entering lake, promotes deposition fine potentially microplastics. This suggests that concentrations will not be in-channel but rather floodplain other low velocity environments such meander cutoffs. We also identified new mechanism fixation freshwater ecological engineers, specifically caddisflies, incorporated into casing. These highlight need explore further hydrodynamic impacts fate transport rivers.
