The contamination of ecosystem compartments by microplastics (MPs) is an ubiquitous problem. MPs have been observed in mice tissues, and recently human blood, stool placenta. However, two aspects remain unclear: whether accumulate peripheral organs, specifically the liver, if liver cirrhosis favours this process. We aimed to examine tissue samples determine liver. This proof-of-concept case series, conducted Germany, Europe, analyzed 6 patients with 5 individuals without underlying disease. A total 17 (11 3 kidney spleen samples) were according final protocol. reliable method for detection MP particles from 4 30 µm was developed. Chemical digestion samples, staining Nile red, subsequent fluorescent microscopy Raman spectroscopy performed. Morphology, size composition polymers assessed.Considering limit detection, all disease tested negative MPs. In contrast, concentrations cirrhotic tissues positive showed significantly higher compared Six different microplastic ranging detected. This series assessed presence found six cirrhosis, but not those Future studies are needed evaluate hepatic accumulation represents a potential cause pathogenesis fibrosis, or consequence portal hypertension. No funding received conducting investigator driven study.

Micro and nanoplastics are fragments with dimensions less than a millimeter invading all terrestrial marine environments. They have become major global environmental issue in recent decades and, indeed, scientific studies highlighted the presence of these over world even environments that were thought to be unspoiled. Analysis micro/nanoplastics isolated samples from abiotic biotic matrices has increasingly common. Hence, need find valid techniques identify micro nano-sized particles. In this review, we discuss current potential identification methods used microplastic analyses along their advantages limitations. We most suitable currently available, physical chemical ones, as well challenges enhance existing develop new ones. Microscopical (i.e., dissect, polarized, fluorescence, scanning electron, atomic force microscopy) one for micro/nanoplastics, but they limitation produce incomplete results small At present, combination analysis spectroscopy) overcome limit together recently introduced alternative approaches. For example, holographic imaging microscope configuration images microplastics directly unfiltered water, thus discriminating diatoms differentiates different sizes, shapes, plastic types. The development analytical instruments coupled each other or conventional innovative microscopy could solve problems micro/nanoplastics.

Rural areas are exposed to severe environmental pollution issues fed by industrial and agricultural activities combined with poor waste sanitation management practices, struggling achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line Agenda 2030. communities examined through a “dual approach” as both contributors receivers of plastic leakage into natural environment (through air–water–soil–biota nexus). Despite emerging trend research, this paper, we identify few studies investigating rural communities. Therefore, proxy analysis peer-reviewed literature is required outline significant gaps related regions. This work focuses on key stages such (i) effects communities, (ii) generated (iii) development sector low- middle-income countries SDGs, (iv) circular economy opportunities reduce areas. Microplastics, the microscopic plastics, are fragments of any type plastic that being produced today as waste originating from anthropogenic activities. Such microplastics discharged into environment, and they enter back human body through different means. The spread in environment due to environmental factors inherent properties microplastics, such density, hydrophobicity, recalcitrance, then eventually water environment. In this study, better understand behavior an extensive literature review was conducted on occurrence aquatic environments categorized by seawater, wastewater, freshwater. We summarized abundance distribution studied affecting them detail. addition, focusing sampling pretreatment processes can limit analysis results we discussed depth methods, density separation, organic matter digestion methods for each Finally, potential hazards posed aging adsorption pollutants or ingestion organisms, exposure were also investigated.

In recent decades, much attention has been paid to microplastic pollution, and research on microplastics begun grow exponentially. However, still suffers from the lack of standardized protocols methods for investigation under laboratory conditions. Therefore, in this review, we summarize critically discuss results 715 studies published last five years provide recommendations future research. Analysis data revealed that majority particles used are manufactured spheres polystyrene ranging size 1 50 µm, half did not characterize used, a minority aged particles, investigated leaching chemicals microplastics, or natural as control. There is large discrepancy between those found environment, many suffer environmental relevance incomplete information used. We have summarized discussed these issues provided focusing (i) selection, (ii) characterization, (iii) test design microplastics.
