The long-term health of many South African estuaries is impacted by pollutants entering these systems through industrial and agricultural runoff, sewage outfalls, contaminated storm water drainage, flows from informal settlements, plastic materials in marine debris. Uncontrolled inputs combined with poor environmental management often result elevated levels persistent organic (POPs) affected estuaries. Data on POPs research 1960 to 2020 were analysed terms their sources, investigations, implications. outcome showed polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) per- poly-fluoroalkyl sulphonates (PFASs) exceed the US EPA advisory for drinking water. Concentration organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) below WHO limits, while those fish tissues most found be FDA limits. Although compartments some (e.g. Rooiels uMngeni estuaries) seem less relative other around world, others polluted critically modified Durban Bay, Swartkops, Sundays, Buffalo systems). Due inconsistent monitoring methods coupled limited data availability, temporal trends unclear. Of 290 Africa, 65 prioritised recommended evaluation based pollution a strategy was defined sampling. Government policies curb need enforced prevent chronic contamination that leads quality deterioration loss ecosystem services.
