Microplastics and nanoplastics have become emerging particulate anthropogenic pollutants rapidly turned into a field of growing scientific public interest. These tiny plastic particles are found in the environment all around globe as well drinking water food, raising concerns about their impacts on human health. To adequately address these issues, reliable information ambient concentrations microplastics is needed. However, micro- nanoplastic extremely complex diverse terms size, shape, density, polymer type, surface properties, etc. While particle different media can vary by up to 10 orders magnitude, analysis such samples may resemble searching for needle haystack. This highlights critical importance appropriate methods chemical identification, quantification, characterization nanoplastics. The present article reviews advanced representative mass-based particle-based microplastics, with focus sensitivity lower-size limit detection. advantages limitations methods, complementarity comprehensive discussed. A special attention paid approaches Finally, an outlook establishing harmonized standardized analyze challenging contaminants presented, perspectives within beyond this research

The widespread use of plastics determines the inevitable human exposure to its by-products, including microplastics (MPs), which enter organism mainly by ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Once internalised, MPs may pass across cell membranes translocate different body sites, triggering specific cellular mechanisms. Hence, potential health impairment caused internalisation accumulation is prime concern, as confirmed numerous studies reporting evident toxic effects in various animal models, marine organisms, lines. In this pilot single-centre observational prospective study, breastmilk samples collected from N. 34 women were analysed Raman Microspectroscopy, and, for first time, MP contamination was found 26 out samples. detected microparticles classified according their shape, colour, dimensions, chemical composition. most abundant composed polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, with sizes ranging 2 12 µm. data statistically relation patients' (age, personal care products containing plastic compounds, consumption fish/shellfish, beverages, food packaging), but no significant relationship found, suggesting that ubiquitous presence makes inevitable.

Environmental microparticle is becoming a global pollutant and the entire population increasingly exposed to microparticles from artificial materials. The accumulation of including microplastics its subsequent effects need be investigated timely keep sustainable development human society. This study aimed explore environmental particles in thrombus, pathological structure blood circulation system.Patients receiving cardiovascular surgical operations were screened twenty-six thrombi collected, digested filtered. Non-soluble enriched on filter membrane then analyzed identified with Raman Spectrometer. associations particle status (presence or absence) number thrombus clinical indicators examined. One strict quality control-particle detection system was designed eliminate contaminations.Among thrombi, sixteen contained eighty-seven ranging 2.1 26.0 μm size. each ranged one fifteen median reaching five. All found irregularly block-shaped. Totally, twenty-one phthalocyanine particles, Hostasol-Green particle, low-density polyethylene microplastic, which synthetic materials, thrombi. rest included iron compounds metallic oxides. After adjustment for potential confounders, significantly positive association between platelet levels detected (P < 0.01).This provides first photograph spectrum evidence A large non-soluble material could accumulate arteries, suggesting that risk exposure under-estimated re-evaluation health urgently needed. There will series reports assessing humans future this research provided clues research.

Raman spectroscopy is gaining ground in the analysis of microplastics, especially due to its high spatial resolution that allows investigation small plastic particles, whose numeric abundance argued be particularly relevant aquatic systems. Here, we aimed at outlining status microplastics from systems, highlighting advantages and drawbacks this technique critically presenting tools ways effectively employ instrument improve spectra obtained their interpretation. In particular, summarized procedural information for use spectroscopy, discussed issues linked fluorescence interference weathered polymers, which may complicate interpretation signatures. context, a deep understanding different polymers peaks chemical fingerprints fundamental avoid misidentification. Therefore, provided catalog with detailed about most common represents, best our knowledge, first comprehensive resource systematically synthesized peaks. Additionally, focused on additives, are contained majority plastics. These compounds often intense scattering partly or completely overlie actual material types, resulting identification additives alone misidentification issue. For these reasons, also presented new R package "RamanMP" includes database 356 (325 additives). This will help foster technique, becoming microplastic analysis.

The ubiquitous presence of microplastics (MPs) and their health effects is a recent scientific topic. However, the investigation MPs in human/biological matrices has several limitations due to analytical methods sample treatment protocols. In this study, urine samples six volunteers from different cities south Italy (three men three women) was investigated by Raman microspectroscopy. analysis pinpointed four pigmented microplastic fragments (4-15 μm size), with irregular shapes, which were characterized terms morphology chemical composition. Polyethylene vinyl acetate (PVA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) found (PVA PVC one female PP PE male samples). This preliminary study suggests that could pass through gastrointestinal tract are eliminated biological processes.
