The impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on economies, public health, ecosystems, and aquaculture across the globe have all increased in recent decades, this has been acutely case China. Here, we review history HABs research China, as well trends future prospects HAB science most updated analyses demonstrated that number events, species, aerial coverage HABs, Chinese waters during 21st century were higher than last two decades 20th century. increase China significantly correlated with discharge ammonium total phosphorus into coastal (p < 0.01 for both). Notable newly recognized events included chronic caused by Prorocentrum donghaiense Karenia mikimotoi, a paralytic shellfish poisoning event Gymnodinium catenatum sickened 80 people, brown tides Aureococcus anophagefferens, green Ulva prolifera, golden Sargassum horneri, disruption nuclear power plant bloom Phaeocystis globosa. A series key discoveries regarding made including documentation nearly known toxins waters, discovery novel cyst-formation and/or life stages multiple HABs-causing identification chemical physical oceanographic drivers those formed P. donghaiense, K. Phytoplankton and microzooplankton are crucial players in marine ecosystems first responders to environmental changes, but their community structures how they shaped by conditions have rarely been studied simultaneously. In this study, we conducted an eDNA metabarcoding sequencing combined with multiple statistical methods simultaneously analyze the phytoplankton Liaohe (LH) Yalujiang (YLJ) estuaries. The major objective was examine plankton structure assembly mechanism may differ between two estuaries similar latitudinal position climate geographical segregation differential level of urbanization (more LH). Clear differences diversity composition communities LH YLJ were observed. Richness significantly higher than YLJ, while richness YLJ. magnitude intrahabitat variations stronger that microzooplankton. Some taxa also showed interhabitat relative abundances. a geographic distance-decay similarity microzooplankton, significant found less urbanized estuary. Community was, based on neutral models, driven primarily stochastic processes, deterministic processes contributed more for Furthermore, detected wider habitat niche breadths dispersal abilities These results suggest passive shapes whereas selection community. IMPORTANCE Understanding underlying mechanisms shaping metacommunity is useful management improving ecosystem function. research presented manuscript mainly tried address effects geography communities, temperate order achieve purpose, developed method 18S rRNA gene. from latitude climatic obvious heterogeneity investigated. our study could lay solid foundation ascertaining assembly.
