Twenty years after the first publication that used term microplastic, we review current understanding, refine definitions, and consider future prospects. Microplastics arise from multiple sources, including tires, textiles, cosmetics, paint, fragmentation of larger items. They are widely distributed throughout natural environment, with evidence harm at levels biological organization. pervasive in food drink have been detected human body, emerging negative effects. Environmental contamination could double by 2040, wide-scale has predicted. Public concern is increasing, diverse measures to address microplastic pollution being considered international negotiations. Clear on efficacy potential solutions now needed issue minimize risks unintended consequences.

The interaction between microplastics (MPs) and pollutants is crucial for assessing the environmental risk of MPs. It necessary to pay attention adsorption/desorption behavior antibiotics on MPs due their potential role in antibiotic resistance. When MPs-loaded are ingested by organisms, they enter gastrointestinal tract undergo desorption, leading corresponding toxic effects. Existing literature primarily focuses adsorption behavior, while there a lack systematic generalizations desorption or combined effects organisms. Therefore, this article provides review mechanisms, biological tract. Desorption suggests that characteristics (aging hydrophobicity) components fluid (digestive enzyme species pH) can also have effect desorption. Moreover, summarizes induced MPs-antibiotics, demonstrating either enhance reduce plants, microorganisms, aquatic animals. Since methodological uniformity relevance natural environment main shortcomings existing literature, future research should focus actual water given region studying at gene, protein, metabolic levels. This direction expected provide valuable references insights evaluating antibiotics.

Micro-nano plastics (MNPs) are emerging environmental and food contaminants that raising serious health concerns. Due to the polycontamination of web with pollutants (EPs), now MNPs, co-ingestion EPs MNPs is likely occur, potential synergistic effects such co-ingestions completely unstudied. In this study, we therefore sought determine two model EPs, arsenic boscalid, on uptake toxicity 25 1000 nm polystyrene (PS-25 PS-1000), vice versa, employing a triculture small intestinal epithelium combined simulated digestion. 24 h exposures, neither nor + caused significant toxicity. The presence PS-25 significantly increased (from 0.0 5.8%, p < 0.001) translocation 5.2 9.8%, 0.05) but had no effect boscalid or translocation, whereas PS-1000 either EP. both PS was also by rising from 10.6 19.5% (p 0.01) for 4.8 8.5% PS-1000. These findings highlight need further studies assess MNP-EP interactions possible adverse impacts.

Aged micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) are normally the ultimate state of plastics in environment after aging. The changes physical and chemical characteristics aged MNPs significantly influence their environmental behavior by releasing additives, forming byproducts, adsorbing contaminants. However, a systematic review is lacking on effects ecological human health regarding increasing but scattered studies results. This Review first summarizes unique methods for quantifying aging degree. Then we focused potential impacts organisms, ecosystems, health, including "Trojan horse" under real conditions. Through combining meta-analysis analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model, demonstrated that, compared to virgin MNPs, would result biomass decrease oxidative stress increase organisms lead total N/P greenhouse gas emissions ecosystems while causing cell apoptosis, antioxidant system reaction, inflammation health. Within framework risk assessment, used quotient (RQ) physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBK) models as examples illustrate importance considering degree data acquisition, model building, formula evaluation. Given risks our urgent call more understand hazards real-world environments.

The harmful environmental impact of plastic waste has justifiably received substantial attention from the scientific community. In contrast, toxicological effects nanoplastics (NP) on aquatic organisms, as well potential implications for human health, remain largely unexplored and poorly understood. Despite growing awareness pollution, risks associated with ubiquitous presence in our food beverages are not yet fully recognized. NPs, which smaller than 1 µm, along a mixture MPs fragments, can find their way into water bodies through various sources may easily be taken up by organisms. This paper summarizes existing literature NPs bioavailability, accumulation patterns within tissues fish, shellfish, zooplankton, influence biological factors absorption diet. Study indicated that pose significant to both ecosystems health due ability bioaccumulate marine organisms biomagnify web. It highlighted species ingest leading distribution across different tissues, result toxic such oxidative stress, DNA damage, inflammation, impacts growth reproduction. identified critical gaps current research, particularly regarding long-term low-dose NP exposure need standardized testing methodologies ensure comparability studies. Furthermore, necessity further research understand pathways humans exposed toxicokinetics, chronic issues. Therefore, more studies required employ rigorous uniform address an emerging threat chains; accurately assess related together cumulative toxicity perhaps when combined other pollutants.
