Abstract Biosynthesis of specialized metabolites (SM), including phenolics, terpenoids, and alkaloids, is stimulated by many environmental factors light. In recent years, significant progress has been made in understanding the regulatory mechanisms involved light-stimulated SM biosynthesis at transcriptional, posttranscriptional, posttranslational levels regulation. While several excellent reviews have primarily focused on impacts general factors, light, an individual class SM, here we highlight regulation three major pathways light-responsive gene expression, microRNA regulation, modification proteins. addition, present our future perspectives this topic.

Glucosinolates (GSLs), found mainly in species of the Brassicaceae family, are one most well-studied classes secondary metabolites. Produced by action myrosinase on GSLs, GSL-derived hydrolysis products (GHPs) primarily defend against biotic stress planta. They also significantly affect quality crop products, with a subset GHPs contributing unique food flavors and multiple therapeutic benefits or causing disagreeable odors health risks. Here, we explore potential these bioactive functions, which could be exploited for future sustainable agriculture. We first summarize our accumulated understanding GSL diversity distribution across representative species. then systematically discuss evaluate unutilized genes involved biosynthesis, transport, as candidate engineering targets. To produce high-quality broccoli microgreens, suitable light intensity for growth and phytochemical contents of microgreens in an artificial plant factory were studied. The grown 50 had the highest fresh weight, dry moisture content, while lowest. With increasing intensity, chlorophyll content increased, whereas carotenoid decreased. soluble protein, sugar, free amino acid, flavonoid, vitamin C, glucosinolates except progoitrin higher μmol·m−2·s−1. Success of plants largely depends on their ability to defend against herbivores. Since emergence the first voracious consumers, maintained adapting structures and chemistry escape from extinction. Metabolic diversity kingdom is truly amazing, although many have already been identified, large number potentially useful chemicals remain unexplored bio-resources. Similarly, biosynthetic routes for involve enzymes, some still wait identification biochemical characterization. Moreover, regulatory mechanisms that control gene expression enzyme activities metabolism are scarcely known. Finally, understanding how defense exert toxicity and/or repellency remains limited typical examples, such as proteinase inhibitors, cyanogenic compounds nicotine. The glucosinolate pathway, which is present in the order Brassicales, one of most researched defensive natural product biosynthesis pathways. Its core molecules, glucosinolates are broken down upon pathogen challenge or tissue damage to yield an array products that may help plants defend against stressor. Though widely known decomposition antimicrobial isothiocyanates, there a wide range other volatile and non-volatile arise from this biosynthetic pathway. This review summarizes our current knowledge on interaction these much less examined, non-isothiocyanate with fungi. It deals compounds including (1) their precursors; (2) glucosinolate-derived nitriles (e.g. derivatives 1H-indole-3-acetonitrile), thiocyanates, epithionitriles oxazolidine-2-thiones; (3) putative isothiocyanate downstream such as raphanusamic acid, 1H-indole-3-methanol (= indole-3-carbinol) its oligomers, 1H-indol-3-ylmethanamine ascorbigen; (4) 1H-indole-3-acetonitrile 1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde (indole-3-carboxaldehyde), 1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid derivatives; (5) indole phytoalexins brassinin, cyclobrassinin brassilexin.
