In this review, we evaluate evidence for the hypothesis that developmental changes in emotion regulation tendencies during adolescence depend on maturation of affective control.Affective control refers to application cognitive contexts, is, capacity attend and respond goal-relevant information, while inhibiting attention responses toward distracting information. The suggests develops throughout into adulthood. However, trajectory appears not be uniform across different facets control. In particular, inhibit information may reduced relative childhood adulthood.Focusing association between development adolescence, research reviewed supports notion as a building block successful regulation.Good related fewer ruminative well more frequent reappraisal older adolescents.Lower use habitual suppression, itself type inhibition, shows an with updating capacity. We conclude by discussing implications these findings mental health potential benefits associated improving control.

Everyday life is defined by goal states that are continuously reprioritized based on available, often affective information. To pursue these goals, individuals need to process and maintain goal-relevant information, while ignoring potentially salient information distracts resources from goals. Empirically, this ability has typically been operationalized as working memory (WM) capacity. A growing body of research investigating the impact information’s salience WM In present review we address question exploring potential differential compared with neutral WM, underlying neural substrates. Background Cognitive rigidity and working memory impairment are established features of internalizing syndromes. Growing evidence suggests that deficits in affective control –cognitive the context emotion – may underpin elevated emotion-related impulsivity various psychiatric disorders. Objective This study examines two components (affective flexibility emotional memory) as potential neurocognitive processes linking to psychopathology. Method Undergraduate participants (analysis n = 120) completed Memory Affective Flexibility Task (MAFT), a novel behavioral assessment designed assess hot cognition performance, alongside self-report measures symptoms Results Structural equation modeling suggested less accurate during neutral trials (cool cognition) was associated with more However, effects were not significantly related or psychopathology scores. Conclusions Although findings provide no support for validity MAFT indices cognition, these results replicate extend work on importance cool correlates

The ability to exert influence on our emotions plays a significant role in the attainment of goals. To have control over when and how we experience is thought be impacted by higher cognitive processes such as executive functions. However, there inadequate research support this notion. Hence, examined relationship between functions - updating, shifting, inhibition emotion regulation strategies reappraisal expressive suppression. We predicted that updating would positively relate reappraisal, while Shifting both Participants completed tasks. Then, they used suppression or response unpleasant pictures, accompanied physiological recording. Faster was associated with larger heart rate deceleration during reappraisal. Inhibition more frequent use Overall, results confirm idea level partially related effective application strategies. content function tasks does not affect association regulation. Remembering places in which emotional events occur is essential for individual's survival. However, the mechanisms through emotions modulate information processing working memory, especially visuo-spatial domain, little understood and controversial. The present research was aimed at investigating effect of incidentally learned stimuli on memory (VSWM) performance by using a modified version object-location task. Eight black rectangles appeared simultaneously computer screen; this immediately followed sequential presentation eight pictures (selected from IAPS) superimposed onto each rectangle. Pictures were selected considering two main dimensions emotions: valence arousal. Immediately after presentation, participants had to relocate original position as accurately possible. In first experiment arousal manipulated either between-subject (Experiment 1A) or within-subject factors 1B 1C). Results showed that negative enhanced object location only when they presented with neutral ones within same encoding trial. This enhancing emotion replicated also positive pictures. Experiment 2 level between-subjects (high vs. low) while maintaining factor (negative neutral). Objects associated better relocated, independently 3 role further ascertained manipulating (neutral 3A; 3B) similar levels among A significant observed both experiments. Finally, 4, encoded trial, no observed. Taken together results suggest enhance spatial compete one another access into system. competitive mechanism, an interplay between seems be work.

Abstract Difficulties in regulating affect are core characteristics of a wide range mental health conditions and associated with deficits cognitive control, particularly affective contexts, control. The current study explored how control relates to over the course adolescence. We developed an Affective Control Task, which was administered young adolescents (11–14 years; n = 29); mid-adolescents (15–18 31), adults (22–30 31). task required individuals sort cards according continuously changing rules: color, number, or item type. There neutral condition items were shapes, condition, emotional facial expressions. Better fewer difficulties ( p < .001, R 2 .15). partially accounted for association between age group problems, z 2.61, .009, Akaike information criterion 484, being strongest adolescents, r (27) −.44, .018. further variance self-reported (but not experimental) emotion regulation −3.44, 440). Negative emotion is often hypothesized to trigger a more deliberate processing mode. This effect can manifest as increased precision of information maintained in working memory (WM) captured by reduced WM recall variability under an induced negative emotional state. However, some recent evidence shows that representations are immune any influences. Here, we meta-analyze existing based on data from 13 experiments across 491 participants who performed delay-estimation task and neutral states. We find state modestly reduces increases failures relative the condition. These effects moderated participants' self-report experiences during induction. Collectively, these suggest influences how much well one remember WM. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).
