Abstract Most animals and plants have associated microorganisms, collectively referred to as their microbiomes, which can provide essential functions. Given importance, host-associated microbiomes the potential contribute substantially adaptation of host-microbiome assemblage (the “metaorganism”). Microbiomes may be especially important for rapid novel environments because change more rapidly than host genomes. However, it is not well understood how hosts jointly metaorganism adaptation. We developed a model system with disentangle contributions established replicate mesocosms containing nematode Caenorhabditis elegans co-cultured microorganisms in complex environment (laboratory compost). After approximately 30 generations (100 days), we harvested worm populations subjected them common garden experiment designed unravel impacts microbiome composition genetics on observed that took different trajectories mesocosm lines, some increasing fitness others decreasing, interactions between played an role these contrasting evolutionary paths. chose two exemplary (one increase one decrease) detailed study. For each example, identified specific changes both (for bacteria fungi) gene expression fitness. Our study provides experimental evidence influenced by microbiome.

Facilitation occurs when one species positively impacts the fitness of another, and has predominantly been studied in free-living like plants. can also occur among symbiont (mutualistic or parasitic) strains, but equivalent studies are scarce. To advance an integrated view effect facilitation on ecology evolution, we review empirical evidence their underlying mechanisms, explore factors favouring its emergence, discuss consequences for virulence transmission. We argue that concept improve understanding evolutionary forces shaping communities effects hosts.
