Environmental exposures interplay with human host factors to promote the development and progression of allergic diseases. The worldwide prevalence disease is rising as a result complex gene-environment interactions that shape immune system response. Research shows an association between rise diseases increasingly modern Westernized lifestyles, which are characterized by increased urbanization, time spent indoors, antibiotic usage. These environmental changes in exposure air traffic pollution, fungi, infectious agents, tobacco smoke, other early-life lifelong risk for exacerbation asthma It recognized timing, load, route allergen affect phenotypes development. Still, our ability prevent hindered gaps understanding underlying mechanisms interaction environmental, viral, pathways impact This Review highlights epidemiologic mechanistic evidence linking airway responses.

Few treatments for human diseases have received as much investigation in the past 20 years probiotics. In 2017, English-language meta-analyses totaling 52 studies determined effect of probiotics on conditions ranging from necrotizing enterocolitis and colic infants to constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy adults. The strongest evidence favor lies prevention or treatment 5 disorders: enterocolitis, acute infectious diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, antibiotic-associated infant colic. Probiotic mechanisms action include inhibition bacterial adhesion; enhanced mucosal barrier function; modulation innate adaptive immune systems (including induction tolerogenic dendritic cells regulatory T cells); secretion bioactive metabolites; regulation enteric central nervous systems. Future research is needed identify optimal probiotic dose specific diseases, address whether addition prebiotics (to form synbiotics) would enhance activity, determine if defined microbial communities provide benefit exceeding that single-species
