Clinicians can encounter sex and gender disparities in diagnostic therapeutic responses. These are noted epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, disease progression, response to treatment. This Review discusses the fundamental influences of as modifiers major causes death morbidity. The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine promises to revolutionize health care. Precision methods identify phenotypes patients with less‐common responses treatment or unique healthcare needs. AI leverages sophisticated computation inference generate insights, enables the system reason learn, empowers clinician decision making through augmented intelligence. Recent literature suggests that translational research exploring this will help solve most difficult challenges facing medicine, especially those in which nongenomic genomic determinants, combined information from patient symptoms, clinical history, lifestyles, facilitate personalized diagnosis prognostication.

A little over 5 years ago, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced intention to develop policies require applicants report plans balance male and female cells animals in preclinical investigations. Soon thereafter, NIH issued a request for information from scientific community consulted with various stakeholders. The feedback received was considered during development policy requiring consideration sex as biological variable (SABV) NIH-funded research on vertebrate humans, which went into effect applications due or after January 25, 2016. We identified programs related SABV reviewed SABV-relevant literature. find that application throughout process can serve guiding principle improve value biomedical science. is engaged ongoing efforts resources help investigators consider their research. also provide an update lessons learned, highlight ways different disciplines SABV, describe opportunities discovery applying offers. call NIH's stakeholders redouble integrate enterprise. Sex- gender-aware investigations are critical conduct rigorous transparent science advancement personalized medicine. This kind achieves its greatest potential when gender considerations integrated enterprise end-to-end manner, basic investigations, through translational clinical research, improved health care delivery.

In 2016, to address the historical overrepresentation of male subjects in biomedical research, US National Institutes Health implemented a policy requiring investigators consider sex as biological variable. order assess impact this policy, we conducted bibliometric analysis across nine disciplines for papers published 34 journals 2019, and compared our results with those similar study carried out by Beery Zucker 2009. There was significant increase proportion studies that included both sexes all disciplines, but eight there no change data analyzed sex. The majority failed provide rationale single-sex or lack sex-based analyses, did relied on misconceptions surrounding hormonal variability females. Together, these demonstrate while sex-inclusive research practices are more commonplace, still gaps analyses reporting many disciplines.
