Abstract Interoception, the perception and integration of physiological signals, is a fundamental aspect self-awareness homeostasis. While previous work has explored interoceptive processing in relation to cardiac system, research respiratory domain, particularly brain structure function, limited. To address this gap, we utilised Bayesian psychophysical model quantify perceptual, metacognitive, affective dimensions interoception sample 207 healthy participants. We also measured individual whole-brain microstructural indices myelination, myeloarchitecture, cortical iron using quantitative imaging. Voxel-based quantification analyses revealed distinct patterns microstructure insular, cingulate, primary sensory cortices, which underpin perceptual sensitivity precision. In addition, metacognitive bias was associated with increased myelination cingulate cortex periaqueductal grey, while correlated midline prefrontal cortex. At an level, resistance related somatosensory By revealing specific histological tied differences interoception, our results uncover neural pathways that govern emotional facets processing.

Interoception has historically been assessed using behavioural tests of accuracy, self-report measures or through the characterisation neural signals underlying interoceptive processing. More recent conceptualisations interoception incorporate attention and higher-order related to interpretation signals. At present, these dimensions are largely in isolation, yet this fails capture complexity interoception. Comprehensive assessment across can determine full operation general function. Current work suggests that processes may be dissociable bodily axes, with differential mapping cognitive emotion To characterise differences profiles, all within individuals, both a single axis (e.g., cardiac) axes. Future better delineate how correspond different types help isolate selective disruptions clinical conditions.

Recent neurocomputational theories have hypothesized that abnormalities in prior beliefs and/or the precision-weighting of afferent interoceptive signals may facilitate transdiagnostic emergence psychopathology. Specifically, it has been suggested that, certain psychiatric disorders, processing mechanisms either over-weight or under-weight from viscera (or both), leading to a failure accurately update about body. However, this not directly tested empirically. To evaluate potential roles and precision context, we fit Bayesian computational model behavior patient sample during an awareness (heartbeat tapping) task. Modelling revealed perturbation condition (inspiratory breath-holding heartbeat tapping), healthy individuals (N = 52) assigned greater ascending cardiac than with symptoms anxiety 15), depression 69), co-morbid depression/anxiety 153), substance use disorders 131), eating 14)–who failed increase their estimates resting levels. In contrast, did find strong evidence for differences beliefs. These results provide first empirical modeling selective dysfunction adaptive conditions, lay groundwork future studies examining how reduced influences visceral regulation interoceptively-guided decision-making.

It has recently been suggested that predictive processing principles may apply to interoception, defined as the of hormonal, autonomic, visceral, and immunological signals. In current study, we aimed at providing empirical evidence for role cardiac interoceptive prediction errors signals on allostatic adjustments, using transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) a tool modulate afferents. within-subject design, participants performed cardiac-related task (heartbeat counting task) under taVNS sham stimulation, spaced 1-week apart. We observed taVNS, in contrast facilitated maintenance accuracy levels over time (from initial, stimulation-free, baseline block subsequent blocks), suggesting have helped maintain engagement afferent During task, compared sham, produced higher heart-evoked potentials (HEP) amplitudes, potential readout measure error processing. Further analyses revealed positive relation between adjustments-as measured by heart rate variability (HRV)-was mediated HEP amplitudes. Providing initial support accounts our results suggest increase precision with which are processed, favoring their influence adjustments.
