Abstract Phosphate crystals are known for their low birefringence, a result of the symmetrical tetrahedral structure PO 4 groups. Attempts to increase birefringence have traditionally involved incorporation highly anisotropic ions and Yet, majority modified phospates still exhibit value below 0.1, due counteracting effects elements within coordination. The present study has first time discovered novel birefringence‐active Hg I 2 II O 9 unit successfully constructed layered structure, which ingeniously prevents mutual cancellation effects. This synthesis (Te ) (HPO confirms effectiveness this strategy, yielding 0.444 at 546 nm, outperforms 99% phosphate surpasses that commercial counterparts like YVO (0.209@1064 nm) CaCO 3 (0.175@533 nm). Exploring ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials is significant for the conversion of a high-frequency laser. Two scandium phosphites, Sc(HPO3)(H2PO3)(H2O) and Sc(H2PO3)3, were successfully synthesized. Centric exhibits short UV cutoff edge (<200 nm) unique double-layer structure [Sc2(HPO3)2(H2PO3)2(H2O)2]∞. The acentric Sc(H2PO3)3 three-dimensional [Sc(H2PO3)3]∞ with large band gap 4.05 eV, it demonstrates moderately phase-matchable second-harmonic-generation response [0.60 × KDP (KH2PO4)] at 1064 nm. crystal structures, optical properties, theoretical calculations two compounds are discussed. This work will promote exploration new NLO phosphite materials.

To maintain moderate birefringent properties without compromising the wide optical transmittance window characteristic of phosphate materials, a crucial approach focuses on designing innovative functional units with great performance. This research has demonstrated that [PO3HCH3] and [PO3CH2NH3] serve as effective birefringent-active components in DUV regions. study successfully prepared two novel crystalline NH4PO3HCH3 NH4PO3CH2NH3, which both deep-UV transparency birefringence. These exceed those conventional MgF2 crystals majority known compounds region. Computational investigations indicate observed birefringence is from building blocks, highlighting potential tetrahedral coordination environment engineering viable strategy for developing new units.
