Many studies discuss the impact of music programs on prison inmates. However, few have investigated formerly incarcerated individuals (FIIs), and none them focused programs’ characteristics. This phenomenological study explores characteristics a music-based rehabilitation program for FIIs. Five FIIs three staff members who participated in group were interviewed. The following four themes emerged: Continuity—the importance FIIs’ previous positive acquaintance with while still being prison. Egalitarian approach—the treating understanding, tolerance, non-judgmentalism, use an eye-level approach. Cultural sensitivity—the members’ sensitivity to different backgrounds form connection. Playfulness—the program’s ability break free from “fight-or-flight” mode experience counter playfulness. findings are discussed through perspective criminology.

Mental and substance use disorders have been identified as the leading cause of global disability, burden mental illness is concentrated among those experiencing disability due to serious (SMI). Music has studied a support for SMIs decades, with promising results; however, lack synthesized evidence precluded increased uptake access music-based approaches. The purpose this scoping review was identify types quantity research at intersections music SMIs, document evidentiary gaps opportunities, generate recommendations improving practice. Studies were included if they reported on music's utilization in treating or mitigating symptoms related five SMIs: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety major depressive post-traumatic stress disorder. Eight databases searched; screening resulted 349 studies data extraction. Schizophrenia most SMI, disorder least. Demographics, settings, activity details found be inconsistently insufficiently reported; listening recorded emerged common musical activity, appeared affected by conditions under study. RCTs predominant study design, 271 unique measures utilized across 289 primary studies. Over two-thirds (68.5%) positive results, 2.8% reporting worse results than comparator, 12% producing indeterminate results. A key finding that synthesis insufficient reporting, widely varied outcomes measures, intervention complexity; result, widespread changes are necessary reduce heterogeneity (as feasible), increase replicability transferability, improve understandings mechanisms causal pathways. Overview: Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has emerged as a severely debilitating psychiatric associated with critical illness. Little progress been made in the treatment of post-intensive care unit (ICU) PTSD. Aim: To synthesize neurobiological evidence on pathophysiology PTSD and brain areas involved, to highlight potential music treat post-ICU Methods: Critical narrative review elucidate an evidence-based framework inform study interventions for post-ICU. Literature searches were performed PubMed CINAHL. The Scale Assessment Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) guided reporting. Results: A dysfunctional HPA axis feedback loop, increased amygdalic response, hippocampal atrophy, hypoactive prefrontal cortex contribute symptoms. Playing or listening can stimulate neurogenesis neuroplasticity, enhance recovery, normalize response. Additionally, supports effectiveness improve coping emotional regulation, decrease dissociation symptoms, reduce depression anxiety levels, overall severity Conclusions: Despite lack ICU survivors, help people suffering from by decreasing amygdala activity, improving function, balancing HPA-axis.

Abstract Musical Attention Control Training (MACT) is a technique to practice different types of attention: focused, selective, sustained, and (rapidly) alternating. has foundational role in many life tasks. Research shows that MACT positive influence on attention for people with various problems, from older adults dementia acquired brain injury, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, children neurodevelopmental disabilities. During MACT, the therapist arranges musical cues such way centre prefrontal cortex are stimulated necessary neural networks deeper areas recruited collaborate. The uses rhythmical patterns, unexpected changes, timing, grouping cues, multi-dimensional stimuli music manner it type under treatment. Patients diagnosed with both substance use disorder (SUD) and posttraumatic stress (PTSD) often experience hypervigilance, increased fear, difficulties regulating emotions. This dual diagnosis increases treatment complexity. Recently, a short-term music therapy intervention for arousal attention regulation (the SMAART intervention) was designed based on neurobiological findings. Twelve patients SUD PTSD (50% females) in outpatient participated six weekly one-hour sessions of the intervention. Six completed study. symptom severity evaluated Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale Interview DSM-5 (PSSI-5) pre- post-intervention, sustained Bourdon-Wiersma (BW) test. A significant difference measurements PSSI-5 overall found post-intervention. Furthermore, participants showed improvement subscales hyperarousal, mood cognition, attention. The BW test completion time decreased significantly. Two dropped out before end due to craving. Concerning future research, it is recommended define role more explicitly change design randomized controlled trial. risk larger studies high dropout rate (50%). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating sequela of extraordinary traumatic sufferings that threaten personal health and dramatically attenuate the patient's quality life. Accumulating lines evidence suggest functional disorders in ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopaminergic system contribute substantially to PTSD symptomatology. Notably, music therapy has been shown greatly ameliorate symptoms. In this literature review, we focused on whether improved symptoms, based VTA action, including effects dopamine (DA)-related gene expression, promotion DA release metabolism, activation activities. addition, strengths limitations studies concerning results are discussed. Collectively, an effective approach for intervention, which may hold important position.
