There is increasing evidence that habitat decline via fragmentation or species loss can lead to of cultural diversity, complexity richness in non-human animals. For example, a reduction local bird leads lyrebirds sing fewer complex songs, while great apes living fragmented landscapes have smaller repertoires. However, the link between animal culture and ecology remains understudied, potentially interactions ongoing ecological change are poorly understood. Here, we review current state knowledge on how influences culture, focusing vocal communication foraging behaviour. We identify key factors affecting patterning, including direct effects (e.g. environmental variability) indirect connectivity). then emerging for identifying three major threatening processes: fragmentation, degradation urbanization. Finally, develop predictive framework effect these processes highlight diversity fitness costs with conservation implications. This article part theme issue 'Animal culture: changing world'.

The control of swarms has emerged as a paradigmatic example human-autonomy teaming. This review focuses on understanding human coordination behaviours, while controlling evasive autonomous agents, to inform the design human-compatible teammates. We summarize solutions employed by dyads, well verbal communication and division labour strategies observed in four-person teams using virtual simulations. Additionally, we provide an overview artificial agents that replicate human-like dynamics task-dynamical models, which can be integrated into teams. Finally, conclude with open questions regarding preservation situation awareness trust within human-autonomous swarming teams. This article is part theme issue 'The road forward swarm systems'.

Various studies have investigated cognitive mechanisms underlying culture in humans and other great apes. However, the adaptive reasons for evolution of uniquely sophisticated cumulative our species remain unclear. We propose that cultural capabilities are evolutionary result a stepwise transition from ape-like lifestyle earlier hominins to foraging niche still observed extant hunter–gatherers. Recent ethnographic, archaeological genetic provided compelling evidence components (social egalitarianism, sexual social division labour, extensive co-residence cooperation with unrelated individuals, multilocality, fluid sociality high between-camp mobility) engendered unique multilevel structure where (high-fidelity transmission, innovation, teaching, recombination, ratcheting) evolved as adaptations. Therefore, underlies ‘social ratchet’ or irreversible task specialization splitting burden knowledge across which may explain why human collective intelligence is able produce culture. The perspective complex gene-culture dual inheritance system interprets cultural, morphological origins Homo sapiens process recombination innovations appearing differentiated but interconnected populations. How do collective events shape how we remember our lives? We leveraged advances in natural language processing as well a rich, longitudinal assessment of 1,000 Americans throughout 2020 to examine memory is influenced by two prominent factors: surprise and emotion. Autobiographical for displayed unique signature: There was substantial bump March, aligning with pandemic onset lockdowns, consistent across three collections 1 y apart. further investigated emotion, using both immediate retrieved measures, predicted the amount content autobiographical memory: Negative affect increased recall all whereas its more clinical indices, depression posttraumatic stress disorder, selectively nonepisodic recall. Finally, separate cohort, found news be better remembered, surprising, negative, while lockdowns compressed remembered time. Our work connects laboratory findings real world delineates effects acute versus signatures negative emotion on memory.

Human societies are collective brains. People within every society have cultural brains-brains that evolved to selectively seek out adaptive knowledge and socially transmit solutions. Innovations emerge at a population level through the transmission of serendipitous mistakes, incremental improvements novel recombinations. The rate innovation these mechanisms is function (1) society's size interconnectedness (sociality), which affects number models available for learning; (2) fidelity information transmission, how much lost during social (3) trait diversity, range possible solutions recombination. In general, perhaps surprisingly, all three levers can increase harm by creating challenges around coordination, conformity communication. Here, we focus on 'paradox diversity'-that diversity offers largest potential empowering innovation, but also poses difficult both an organizational societal level.
