Adolescence is a dynamic period for the development of emotion regulation. For many individuals, regulation skills improve dramatically during adolescence; however, some youth, adolescence marks beginning or worsening psychopathology characterized by difficulties with In present review, I describe evidence that caregiving experiences play an outsized role in shaping interindividual variability adolescence. After describing work demonstrating links between – emphasis on parental socialization practices and outcomes, characterize our current understanding how behavioral neurobiological indices develop normatively across Using cognitive reappraisal as exemplar strategy, outline ways might impact neurodevelopment. conclude identifying two key future directions adolescent research.

Abstract The ability to regulate one’s emotions is foundational for healthy development and functioning in a multitude of domains, whereas difficulties emotional regulation are recognized as risk factor range adverse outcomes childhood, adolescence, adulthood. Caregivers play key role cultivating the emotion through coregulation, or processes by which they provide external support scaffolding children navigate their experiences. vast majority research date has examined coregulation context caregiver–child dyads. In this paper, we consider family-level that unfold within across multiple family subsystems explore how triadic whole interactions may contribute children’s skills. Furthermore, will examine implications family-centered perspective on prevention intervention childhood behavioral disorders. Because skills undergo such dramatic maturation during first several years life, much our focus be system early childhood; however, many approaches geared toward school-aged adolescents, also devote some attention later developmental periods.

Abstract Children’s behavioral problems have been associated with their family environments. Here, we investigate whether specific features of brain structures could relate to this link. Using structural magnetic resonance imaging 8756 children aged 9-11 from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Developmental study, show that high conflict and low parental monitoring scores are children’s problems, as well smaller cortical areas orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate middle temporal gyrus. A longitudinal analysis indicates psychiatric increased decreased 1 year later, mediate associations between reduced conflict, scores. These results emphasize relationships structure children, environments, problems.

Abstract Emotion dysregulation is a transdiagnostic factor in the development of various mental and behavioral disorders, thus requiring ample evidence for prevention intervention approaches. The aim current systematic review meta-analysis was to investigate association between parenting dimensions/styles emotion childhood adolescence. Following PRISMA guidelines, registered (PROSPERO CRD42021251672) search terms were entered Web Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, PubMed May 2021. A funnel plot demonstrated no publication bias. Limitations include varying conceptualizations as well lacking specific types emotion.
