The increasing distribution of miniaturized plastic particles, viz. microplastics (100 nm-5 mm) and nanoplastics (less than 100 nm), across the various ecosystems is currently a subject major environmental concern. Exacerbating these concerns fact that (MNPs) display different properties from their corresponding bulk materials; thus, not much understood about full biological ecological implications. Currently, there evidence to prove particles release toxic additives can adsorb chemicals, thereby serving as sinks for poisonous compounds, enhancing bioavailability, toxicity, transportation. Furthermore, potential danger trophic transfer MNPs humans other higher animals, after being ingested by lower organisms. Thus, this paper critically analyzes our current knowledge with regard impacts MNPs. In regard, properties, sources, damaging effects on habitats, particularly biotic components, were elucidated. Similarly, consequent detrimental well future efforts at mitigating discussed. Finally, self-cleaning planet via range saprophytic organisms synthetic also highlighted.

Microplastics are <5 mm in size, made up of diverse chemical components, and come from multiple sources. Due to extensive use unreasonable disposal plastics, microplastics have become a global environmental issue aroused widespread concern about their potential ecological risks. This review introduces the sources, distribution migration agricultural soil ecosystems. The effects on physicochemical properties nutrient cycling also discussed. can alter series key biogeochemical processes by changing characteristics, resulting activities functions microorganisms. animals plants, combined coexisting pollutants (organic heavy metals), risks human health Finally, prevention control strategies microplastic pollution ecosystems put forward, knowledge gaps future research suggestions given. improves understanding behavior ecosystems, provides theoretical reference for better assessment microplastics.

Microplastic contamination poses a significant threat to agroecosystem functioning, provoking move away from the use of conventional oil-based plastics in agriculture, biodegradable alternatives that may be degraded over shorter timescale. The impact these bioplastics on plant and soil health, however, has received relatively little attention. Here, we investigated effect loading (0.01%, 0.1%, 1% 10%) biobased microplastic poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) (Zea mays L.) health function. We showed PHBV caused dose-dependent reduction growth foliar nitrogen (N) content while untargeted metabolite analysis revealed shifts metabolic These results were also reflected soil, where led reduced availability both ammonium nitrate. Soil 14C-isotope tracing 16S metabarcoding suppressed microbial activity, bacterial diversity shifted community structure, inducing major shift pathways, thus functioning. Overall, our data suggests bioplastic is not environmentally benign levels as low 0.01% (0.01 mg kg-1) can induce short-term changes with potential implications for long term health.
