The application of a functional trait‐based approach to ecological restoration is receiving growing attention worldwide, but lack knowledge on traits and how they link ecosystem services imposes major barrier operationalize such approach. Synthesizing the existing thus timely important challenge. We systematically reviewed literature assess are associated across organisms, types, continents. also assessed frameworks target in ecology. Then, we discussed future perspectives for field, especially challenges applying megadiverse tropical ecosystems, which have ambitious commitments. Most papers focused plants (72%), terrestrial habitats (69%), non‐tropical ecosystems (68%) monitored after started rather than using them as previous targets. Only 12% targeted both priori , 3.8% presented clear framework restoration. possibility selecting alternative subsets complementary species their provisioning should make more feasible traditional approaches species‐rich ecosystems. Ecological restoration of forests, meadows, reefs, or other foundational ecosystems during climate change depends on the discovery and use individuals able to withstand future conditions. For coral climate-tolerant corals might not remain tolerant in different environments because widespread environmental adjustment physiology symbionts. Here, we test if parent retain their heat tolerance nursery settings, simple proxies predict successful colonies, heat-tolerant suffer lower growth survival normal settings. Before 2015 natural bleaching event American Samoa, set out 800 fragments from 80 colonies four species selected by prior tests have a range intraspecific tolerance. After event, stock parents showed two three times less across than parents. They also retained higher individual genetic diversity through did corals. The best for thermal were response experimental stress, location reef, microclimate. Molecular biomarkers predictive but highly specific. Colony genotype symbiont genus played similarly strong role predicting bleaching. Combined, our results show that selecting host resilience produced multispecies withstood multiple events, can work be inexpensive, clones within reacted very differently

Coral reef restoration is an increasingly important part of tropical marine conservation. Information about what motivates coral as well its success and cost not understood but needed to inform decisions. We systematically review synthesize data from mostly scientific studies published in peer‐reviewed gray literature on the motivations for restoration, variables measured, outcomes reported, per hectare project, survival restored corals, duration overall spatial extent depending technique employed. The main motivation restore reefs projects assessed was further our ecological knowledge improve techniques, with growth, productivity, being measured. median project 400,000 US$/ha (2010 US$), ranging 6,000 nursery phase gardening 4,000,000 substrate addition build artificial reef. Restoration were short (1–2 years) over small extents (0.01 ha or 108 m 2 ). Median reported corals 60.9%. Future research survey practitioners who do publish their discoveries would complement this work. Our findings database provide critical future restoration.

Abstract Communities that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change need adapt increase their resilience. Effective government policies and plans a key component this transition, but they not sufficient in themselves. The community needs be made aware risks, acquire knowledge about options available for response, empowered take own actions. public engagement is therefore success planning change. This paper focuses on importance adaptation policy. It undertakes systematic quantitative review literature dealing with core themes awareness, knowledge, policy-making. findings reveal gap existing academic engagement, its different types integration both into In addition, show strong link between can used encourage motivate by using behavioural economics as policy instrument. also makes useful contribution identifying more effective strategies improve resilience sustainability.
