There has been an exponential increase in the number of studies reporting on toxicological effects associated with exposure to nano and microplastic particles (NMPs). The majority these studies, however, have used monodispersed polystyrene microspheres (PSMs) as 'model' particles. Here we review differences between manufacture resulting physicochemical properties commerce PSMs most commonly toxicity studies.

The increasing use of plastic polymers in 3D printing applications may lead to human exposure micro- and nanoplastics (MNPLs), raising concerns regarding adverse health consequences such as cancer induction. Little attention has been given MNPLs originated at the end life cycle 3D-printed objects because mechanical environmental degradation waste. This study assessed carcinogenic potential secondary generated through cryomilling using validated vitro Bhas 42 cell transformation assay (CTA). Three-dimensional were printed four types polycarbonate (PC)- polypropylene (PP)-modified thermoplastic filaments, undoped doped with single-walled carbon nanotubes (PC-CNT) silver nanoparticles (PP-Ag), respectively. (< 5 µm) following a three-step top-down process thoroughly characterized. cells treated once (initiation assay) or repeatedly (promotion several concentrations (3.125-100 µg/mL) mimicking realistic conditions, transformed foci formation was evaluated after 21 days. Furthermore, cellular internalization mRNA expression seven genes previously recognized part predictive early signature also evaluated. Despite being internalized, none particles able initiate promote transformation, regardless doping nanomaterials. Alternatively, all significantly increased decreased Prl2c3 Timp4, respectively, under promotion indicating changes that occur before foci. These findings suggest test could have tumorigenic despite not showing morphological cells.

This study examines the long-term impact of polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics (PET-NPLs) and cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) on human lung BEAS-2B cells, focusing key biological hallmarks carcinogenesis. True-to-life PET-NPLs were generated from plastic water bottles characterized to simulate environmental exposure conditions; a comprehensive battery assays was employed assess genotoxicity, cellular transformation, invasiveness. It observed that, compared passage control individual exposures, co-exposure CSC exacerbates oxidative stress, tumorigenic as evidenced by increased DNA damage, colony formation in soft agar, enhanced cell migration invasion. Transcriptomic analysis revealed shift stress regulation including upregulation stress-response genes, SLC7A11, NQO1, HSPA1A, which are linked adaptation tumor survival. At same time, tumor-suppressor such LOX, FN1, significantly downregulated, promoting transformation These results provide compelling evidence that combination enhances carcinogenic traits through genomic instability, disruption tumor-suppressive pathways. underscores importance evaluating synergistic effects combined exposures their implications for health.

Micro/nanoplastics (MNPs), as emerging pollutants, have been detected in both the maternal and fetal sides of placenta pregnant women, their reproductive toxicity has demonstrated vivo vitro experimental models. The Targeted Risk Assessment Environmental Chemicals (TRAEC) strategy innovatively devised to facilitate valid risk assessment, encompassing a comprehensive evaluation reliability, correlation, outcome fitness, integrity across four dimensions based on included published evidence our own findings. This study serves an application case TRAEC, with 40 items research MNPs placenta, which were rigorously screened incorporated into final scoring system. score for this TRAEC is 5.63, suggesting moderate-to-low associated may potentially increase decreasing particle size. It essential emphasize that findings also report original data from assays indicating exposure high-dose groups (100 μg/mL, 200 μg/mL) 50 nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) induces HTR8/SVneo cell cycle arrest apoptosis, lead by disrupting mitochondrial function. Overall, employed provide insight potential health effects ubiquitous MNPs.

Micro/nanoplastic pollution is, without a doubt, one of the most acute and daunting environmental problems worldwide. This chapter, therefore, uses comprehensive bibliometric analysis as method to present research status micro/nanoplastic pollution. With respect broader aspects, first, data are collected from Scopus database. Therefore, advanced methodologies used detect publication patterns citation fronts. The results show that number publications has tended increase in recent years, them about marine problems. Second, according thematic available publications, focus should be on areas such sources micro/nanopolluction, distribution, ecological damage determination, further expansion. Importantly, few networks identified, they easy recognize relation concerned. Finally, it becomes clear is global, not only local, almost limited country.
