Fungi are an understudied, biotechnologically valuable group of organisms. Due to the immense range habitats that fungi inhabit, and consequent need compete against a diverse array other fungi, bacteria, animals, have developed numerous survival mechanisms. The unique attributes thus herald great promise for their application in biotechnology industry. Moreover, can be grown with relative ease, making production at scale viable. search fungal biodiversity, construction living collection, both incredible economic potential locating organisms novel industrial uses will lead products. This manuscript reviews fifty ways which potentially utilized as biotechnology. We provide notes examples each exploitation give from our own work notable researchers. also flow chart used convince funding bodies importance biotechnological research provided world penicillin, lovastatin, globally significant medicines, they remain untapped resource enormous potential.

Abstract Variation in the human gut microbiome can reflect host lifestyle and behaviors influence disease biomarker levels blood. Understanding relationships between microbes phenotypes are critical for understanding wellness disease. Here, we examine associations microbiota ~150 phenotypic features across ~3,400 individuals. We identify major axes of taxonomic variance a putative diversity maximum along Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes axis. Our analyses reveal both known unknown composition clinical markers factors, including host-microbe that composition-specific. These results suggest potential opportunities targeted interventions alter to improve health. By uncovering interrelationships diet blood markers, at population-scale, our serve as roadmap future studies on interactions interventions.

Gut and lungs are anatomically distinct, but potential anatomic communications complex pathways involving their respective microbiota have reinforced the existence of a gut-lung axis (GLA). Compared to better-studied gut microbiota, lung only considered in recent years, represents more discreet part whole associated human host. While vast majority studies focused on bacterial component healthy pathological conditions, works highlighted contribution fungal viral kingdoms both digestive respiratory levels. Moreover, growing evidences indicate key role inter-kingdom crosstalks maintaining host homeostasis diseases evolution. In fact, recently emerged GLA concept involves host-microbe as well microbe-microbe interactions, based localized long-reaching effects. can shape immune responses interfere with course diseases. this review, we aim analyse how influence each other may impact Due limited knowledge virobiota, bacteriobiota mycobiota, specific attention microbial which able local or long-reached within GLA.

Nowadays, obesity is one of the most prevalent human health problems. Research from last 30 years has clarified role imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, unhealthy lifestyle, genetic variability in development obesity. More recently, composition metabolic functions gut microbiota have been proposed as being able to affect development. Here, we will report current knowledge on definition, composition, intestinal microbiota. We performed an extensive review literature, searching for following keywords: metabolism, microbiota, dysbiosis, There evidence association bacteria both infancy adults. are several genetic, metabolic, inflammatory pathophysiological mechanisms involved interplay microbes Microbial changes can be considered a factor humans. The modulation bacterial strains digestive tract help reshape profile obese host suggested by data animal studies. Cancer-microbe associations have been explored for centuries, but cancer-associated fungi rarely examined. Here, we comprehensively characterize the cancer mycobiome within 17,401 patient tissue, blood, and plasma samples across 35 types in four independent cohorts. We report fungal DNA cells at low abundances many major human cancers, with differences community compositions that differ among types, even when accounting technical background. Fungal histological staining of tissue microarrays supported intratumoral presence frequent spatial association macrophages. Comparing communities matched bacteriomes immunomes revealed co-occurring bi-domain ecologies, often permissive, rather than competitive, microenvironments distinct immune responses. Clinically focused assessments suggested prognostic diagnostic capacities mycobiomes, stage I synergistic predictive performance bacteriomes.
