Pet ownership has often been lauded as a protective factor for well-being, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. We expanded this question to consider how pet (i.e., species, number) and owner relationship quality, personality, attachment orientations) characteristics affected association between well-being in pre-registered mixed method analysis of 767 people assessed three times May 2020. In our qualitative analyses, owners listed both benefits costs quantitative we found that was not reliably associated with well-being. Further, largely did depend on number pets owned, species pet(s) quality human-pet relationship, or owner’s psychological characteristics. Our findings are consistent large body research showing null associations (quantitatively) but positive reports (qualitatively).

The question of pet ownership contributing to human well-being has received mixed empirical evidence. This contrasts with the lay intuition that contributes positively wellness. In a large representative sample, we investigate differences may exist between vs. non-pet owners in terms their during COVID-19 pandemic, and examine among different sociodemographic strata, for whom can be more less beneficial. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted Canadian adults (1220 owners, 1204 owners). Pet reported lower than on majority indicators; this general effect held when accounting species (dogs, cats, other species) number pets owned. Compared pets, dog higher well-being. When examining within socioeconomic being owner associated among: women; people who have 2 + children living at home; are unemployed.
