BackgroundNumerous neuromodulatory therapies are currently under investigation or in clinical use for the treatment of psychiatric conditions.Objective/hypothesisWe sought to catalogue past and present human research studies on neuromodulation identify relevant trends this field.MethodsClinicalTrials.gov (https://www.clinicaltrials.gov/) International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (https://www.who.int/ictrp/en/) were queried March 2020 trials assessing outcome disorders. Relevant categorized by variables such as modality, country, brain target, publication status, design, funding source.ResultsFrom 72,086 initial search results, 1252 unique identified. The number registered annually has consistently increased. Half all active a quarter have translated publications. largest proportion involved depression (45%), schizophrenia (18%), substance disorders (14%). spanned 37 countries; China, second contributor (13%) after United States (28%), increased its output substantially recent years. Over 75% non-convulsive non-invasive modalities (e.g., transcranial magnetic stimulation), while convulsive electroconvulsive therapy) invasive deep stimulation) less represented. 72% featured approved cleared interventions. Characteristic inter-modality differences observed with respect enrollment size, trial design/phase, funding. Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex accounted over half focal targets. examining biological correlates increased. Conclusion(s)These results provide comprehensive overview state research, revealing growing scope internationalism field.
