Randomized controlled trials on diet and shortening of leukocyte telomere length (LTL) mostly focus marine-derived n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Walnuts are a sustainable source PUFA. We investigated whether inclusion walnuts (15% energy) in the for 2 years would maintain LTL cognitively healthy elders (63–79 old) compared to control group (habitual diet, abstaining from walnuts). This opportunistic sub-study was conducted within Healthy Aging study, dual-centre (Barcelona, Spain Loma Linda University, California) parallel trial. A sub-set Barcelona site participants were randomly assigned walnut (n = 80) or 69). assessed at baseline we repeated-measures ANCOVA with factors: time (baseline, years) (control, walnut) their interaction. Adjusted means (95% confidence interval) (in kb) controls 7.360 (7.084,7.636) 7.061 (6.835,7.288) after years; corresponding values 7.064 (6.807,7.320) 7.074 (6.864,7.284). The × intervention interaction nearly significant (p 0.079), suggestive trend consumption preserving LTL. exploratory research finding should be confirmed adequate statistical power.

As human life expectancy is rising, the incidence of age-associated diseases will also increase. Scientific evidence has revealed that healthy diets, including good fats, vitamins, minerals, or polyphenolics, could have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, with antiaging effects. Recent studies demonstrated vitamin K a vital cofactor in activating several proteins, which act against age-related syndromes. Thus, can carboxylate osteocalcin (a protein capable transporting fixing calcium bone), activate matrix Gla (an inhibitor vascular calcification cardiovascular events) Gas6 (involved brain physiology cognitive decline neurodegenerative disease inhibitor). Diet is considered an important modifiable lifestyle factor capable of attenuating early cognitive changes in healthy older people. The inclusion nuts the diet has been investigated as a dietary strategy for maintenance brain health across lifespan. This review aimed to present up-to-date evidence regarding association between nut intake and performance. Four databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, Cumulative Index Nursing Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Plus, Embase) were systematically searched from inception April 2020. Eligible articles interventional or observational studies humans aged ≥18 y that measured effects (or association) (almond, hazelnut, macadamia, pistachio, walnut, pecan, pine nut, Brazil cashew, peanut) on outcomes. Out 2374 identified searches, 22 involving 43,793 participants met criteria ultimately included this review. Memory (immediate delayed), attention, processing speed, executive function, visual-spatial ability, well risk mild impairment, outcomes investigated. Lack consistency study design, types used, resulted inconsistent regular consumption mixed protective effect cognition adults different ages. Nonetheless, we observed targeting populations with higher decline tended find more favorable outcome. Furthermore, homogeneous findings specifically addressed walnut performance: out 6 studies, including 2 randomized controlled trials, only 1 did not positive association.

Biomarkers of metabolic syndrome and inflammation are pathophysiological predictors factors senescence age-related diseases. Recent evidence showed that particular diet components, such as walnuts rich in antioxidant bioactive compounds with a balanced lipid profile, could have positive outcomes on human health. A systematic search PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov databases was performed to retrieve randomized controlled trials published from the beginning each database through November 2021, reporting walnut consumption over 22 inflammatory markers middle-aged older adults. The strategy rendered 17 studies final selection, including 11 crossover 6 parallel trials. study revealed walnut-enriched diets had statistically significant decreasing effects for triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol concentrations some presented no consequences anthropometric glycemic parameters. In this study of 56 days, we assessed the antioxidant effects walnut kernel (WK) and septum extract (WSE) D-galactose (D-gal)-induced aging model naturally aged rat model. Young Wistar rats, treated with D-gal (1200 mg/week), old rats received daily WK or WSE added to feed. After 8 weeks, blood, liver, brain samples were collected hematological, biochemical, oxidative stress biomarkers, histological, immunohistochemical analyses performed. Moreover, acetylcholinesterase activity was investigated homogenates. The outcomes demonstrated significant improvement cellular and/or decrease reactive oxygen species, advanced glycation end products, nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, increase glutathione after intake both models. Additionally, showed hypoglycemic effect, lowered activity. Both diets could protect neurons against induced senescence reverse pathological conditions physiological brain. Thus, supplementation can maintain liver health reduce risk diseases, as well onset processes.
