Atropine and scopolamine belong to the tropane alkaloid (TA) family of natural toxins. They can contaminate teas herbal appear in infusions. Therefore, this study focused on analyzing atropine 33 samples tea infusions purchased Spain Portugal determine presence these compounds brewed at 97 °C for 5 min. A rapid microextraction technique (µSPEed®) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used analyze selected TAs. The results showed that 64% analyzed were contaminated one or both White green generally more than black other teas. Of 21 samples, 15 had concentrations above maximum limit (0.2 ng/mL) set Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/1408. In addition, effects heating conditions (time temperature) standards naturally white, green, evaluated. studied 4 ng/mL), there no degradation standard solutions. Brewing with boiling water (decoction) 10 min allowed higher extraction TAs from dry infusion water.

In recent years, following intoxications and false positive drug tests for poppy seeds, dangerously high concentrations of opium alkaloids (OAs) have been found. For this reason, health authorities are demanding studies to establish effective practices reduce OAs in these seeds. Grinding, a common culinary process various recipes, has previously associated with potential morphine degradation. However, not established grinding conditions decrease the concentration all main OAs. Furthermore, due large variation that can occur even same bag, be difficult task. view above, study aimed evaluate first time impact different types, varying or repetitions, determine any degradation trends present As result, it was obtained notable 20% second grinders where oil content seeds is released, hinting at oil's protective role against oxidation. Therefore, choice method crucial. while acknowledging this, relying solely on as good practice reduction may insufficient, seems minimal other tested methods conditions.

Opium poppy is a plant used in both the pharmaceutical and food industries. Substances found on surface of dry seeds belong to group opium alkaloids. However, presence these substances products poses risk consumer health, which why new permissible levels for derivative have been introduced Regulation (EU) 2023/915. This research aimed analyze content all six alkaloids provided directly by producers as well those available local market Poland. The confirmed morphine examined seed samples. alkaloid ranged from 12.46 102.86 mg/kg purchased markets 1.1 110.1 obtained producers. Both groups showed similar other OAs, significantly exceeded limit 20 set European Commission These results indicate that exceeds levels, posing serious health issue necessitating further improvement processing methods.

There is a current trend to make yoghurts with seeds such as poppy enhance their nutritional benefits. These may be contaminated opium alkaloids (OAs) present in the own latex of plant (Papaver somniferum L.). Food processing heat treatment, grinding or washing reduce them, but lactic fermentation has not been studied. In this work, an analytical methodology was optimised based on solid-liquid extraction (SLE) water, purification by magnetic solid-phase (MSPE) mesostructured silica composite β-cyclodextrin (Fe3O4 @SiO2 @mSiO2 @β-CD) and subsequent analysis liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass detector (HPLC-MS/MS). The successfully validated terms linearity, limits detection quantification, matrix effect, precision, recovery tests, selectivity. Therefore, it applied determine OAs commercial yoghurts, detecting morphine, papaverine noscapine all them below limit quantification. Besides, effect studied (6 18 h) storage (1 week/ 4ºC), showing considerable degradation (33–80%) first hours.

An analysis methodology was optimised and validated for the quantification of opium alkaloids (OAs) in ground poppy seeds. This involved ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) solid-phase (SPE) purification before using a high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry detector (HPLC-MS/MS). UAE through design experiments with three factors three-level full factorial design. For SPE optimisation, commercial material compared previously synthesised SBA-15 silica functionalised sulfonic groups (SBA-15-SO3−). The demonstrated superior efficiency only 25 mg proved to be reusable up four cycles. properly terms linearity, limits detection quantification, selectivity. Matrix effects were negligible; adequate recovery values (85–100%) inter-day intra-day precision (≤15%) obtained. greenness method evaluated AGREEprep metric scale, being more environmentally friendly OA methods. Finally, applied different samples seeds revealed concentration 140 mg/kg morphine equivalents one samples, surpassing legislatively established by sevenfold. highlights need analyse these types mitigate potential public health issues.

Following the implementation of European regulation limiting presence tropane alkaloids in certain foods, a survey was conducted Serbia on 103 maize products (grits, polenta and semolina) to determine atropine scopolamine content using liquid chromatography with tandem-mass spectrometry analysis (LC-MS/MS). The probability exceeding Acute Reference Dose (ARfD; 0.016 μg/kg bw/day) sum by consuming these tested. Overall, across age categories - children, younger older adolescents, adults, group ARfD exceeded 21.4%, 17.5%, 11.7% samples, maximum exposure reaching as much 19-, 13-, 9- 9-fold ARfD, respectively. Nevertheless, could be most favorable dietary option (17.9% positive 7.7% resulting excessive 1.4-fold ARfD). According reported findings, adverse health effects cannot ruled out. Margin Exposure, founded clinically significant acute dose established FAO/WHO, ranged from 1194 2381 (mean) 28 56 (95th percentile) categories. These estimates should certainly draw attention food authorities nutritionist, particularly case highly sensitive populations contraindications high consumers corn products, such coeliac patients.
